Good morning ladies. As most of you know, we were discussing sewing up a 3 pce. outfit after the holidays. Well, the winter has seized us all and holidays are over. Let's get sewing!

We will be sewing up a 3 pce. outfit consisting of a jacket, shell and skirt/pant. No specific pattern is needed. There have been some suggestions and these are all fine. Otherwise, use a pattern you have or would like to try.

The idea of this is to see how different we all are and show off our outfits. Get yourself some fabric, a pattern and go for it. These outfits should challenge your imagination either with fabric or embellishment or design.

When you are done, send me a picture, preferably with you wearing it. :bluesmile

This is not a contest nor is there any fancy prize, just a group of fun people making outfits to show on our site. Post as you sew, let us know your progress, or lack of. We can discuss the problems you run across and help each other along the way.

I already have my fabric. I have a linen blend for the pants (I never wear skirts)and I think I have a rayon blend for the jacket but I am not sure if it has enough body. The shell will be made from stash stuff too but I haven't made up my mind which one yet.

Let's get started now and have a finish time of March 31/04
That should give everyone loads of time if they want to do something special. I have a spring outfit in mind.

Okay girls, I'm gonna play this time cuz I need an outfit for Easter and I have the fabric and pattern already (a couple of years now, in fact, I think). It will be a 2 piece hot pink silk linen skirt and jacket with a blouse. Gonna bag the lining in the jacket and sew the skirt and lining as one piece. Gonna have to work garment sewing in with quilt making this Spring cuz I don't have any spring clothes and the things I've seen when I'm out shopping, forget it. The fabrics feel disgusting and look cheap and sleazy.

Sexy charcoal suit, front slit skirt, lined jacket - don't know what to do for the top, need to get some matching fabric, silky silver perhaps? ( I have pale skin, brown eyes and brunette hair, at least, that's what it said on the bottle!) I've not lined a jacket before and a front slit skirt is definately a first!

What constitutes a jacket? Would a shawl or a short sleeve bed jacket count? What about a poncho? Got lots of ideas rolling through my head. I don't wear fitted jackets as they are just too confining!

A short sleeved bed jacket would be fine. A shawl or poncho is totally different but then again, nothing is written in stone. :bluesmile

I have some wonderful gold brocade with dragons on it. I'm taking the easy way out with an unlined kimono style jacket and some moleskin pull on pants. And I have a nice slinky rayon for the shell. I had planned on a button down shirt but maybe an oriental style stand up collar on a shell would be nice. I think I have something like that. Anyway, I'm in. Hopefully I'll finish in time and still get that black jacket I started this week done before the end of the season.

Does looking at the disaster my sewing room is count as progress? I have a few ideas but can't get to my stuff as my sewing room doubles as the place for stuff that doesn't have it's own room.

I have my pants cut out and the in seam and center seam in. Both are flat fell seams -- well really I cheat and do a French seam then top stitch that down.

Hi, I'd love to join you ladies, as I tend to lack motivation, need casual clothes, and have a stash. Soooo, I have cut out navy stretch denim for jeans, McCalls 9233 jeans pattern, this has tons of wonderful directions, I wouldn't consider making my first pair of jeans without them, plus I have only made pull on pants and have armed myself with Pants Fit For Real People. This arvo I will tidy my sewing room its a tip. I will probably also make a hoodie and a Burda mag. or pattern tee, when I have finished the jeans, fitting is a worry though.!

I won some money(!) in a pub quiz on Thursday so have had a splurge with hubby and DD ( age 17) and have bought red pointy stilettos ( for my "sharp modern woman" look, three tops ( for my "aging rock chick" look) and 2m of black polyester satin with a rust and gray chysanthemum thing going on for a top to go with the suit. It is all fairly dark - not TERRRIBLY spring like, but it is me. I'm thinking I might have to make a pattern from a rtw kimono top I have which I know suits me - this will be a real challenge as I've never made an item using something alse as a template before. I beginning to feel brave enough! It is bias cut so Woah! think hard first. Don't you have to hang bias garments or something before hemming?
Hubby was dragged around the shops for 6 hours withoput a complaint - the man is a saint. (occasionally pauses for coffee, flapjack and hot dogs)

I've had to change the look of my jacket. The pattern asked for 3.1 m. fabric. Just fronts, back and shawl collar. I figured I could easily do it with 3 m. Not so.

I needed that 4" for the collar lining. Soooooooo, I have chosen another fabric for the collar, it co-ordinates fine and I have enough for the pants too. :bg:

I have to cut the lining and interfacing out tonite, then I will get sewing! I like to cut a bit and sew a bit.

I somehow lost my reply, here goes again.
Nope, not smart or even fast, just had it cut out and started front pockets before this thread.
Not really happy with the only jean rivets I could find, toddler size, but if they go thru the fabric will do.
Mary, lucky for your stash, makes one feel good to use it too, not so guilty. Until my overflow has been used will try not to buy more.
Magot, great win, and your fabric should suit the kimino, which will be easy to trace.
Will start sewing again, when I have finished here, sewing room now tidy.
We are actually going into autumn in Australia, so will not be sewing for spring, of course.

Finally, I have the jacket cut out. You would think this was a huge undertaking. Sheesh.

I am lining and interfacing the jacket fronts, that is done as well. There is a centre back seam and I applied the Hong Kong finish to that.

Now, maybe I can get to the next step. The jacket is body and sleeve cut in one so there is a seam down the middle of the sleeve. I am going to sew a lapped seam there with the same fabric I bound the back seam with.

Barbara, how are you doing with those rivets?

Your doing okay Mary, your jacket sounds time consuming, so baby steps, although I think everything to do with sewing takes ages. I have decided the rivets will do even if small, so long as they go through all layers, DH said they should, and I always wear a loose top over them anyway. Yesterday, I spent the whole afternoon topstitching the zip area, and unpicking, and stitching again. Each time I came to the bottom curve, the stitches became small, and of course there is a second row equal distance from the first, what a time waster. I am still not that happy with it, maybe I am thinking if I started stitching from the lower end instead of the waist, maybe I could handle the curve faster. Anyway, DS girlfriend said nobody should be staring at the crotch area, and if they are they shouldn't. However, they do pass the 3 foot test I guess, but I know all the same.
Magot, at least you have made a start that is something, I think I need to do lots of small sessions instead of looking for larger quantities of time, of which there are none.

Magot, move your kimono fabric from the drying rack to the cutting table please!

I just finished a cordouroy jumper, and am getting ready to start my skirt and jacket. Changed my mind for now and am doing an a-line skirt with nylon overlay and semi-fitted princess jacket of fabric that I'm using in the base layer for the skirt. Hoping to start that tonight.

I have just spent an evening with The Only Other Woman I have Met In Royston who Sews, my daughters Boyfriends' Mum. She is running a Tudor reenactment society and my daughter is taking part in this extravaganza. I am amazed at the things she has done! My task is to make a smock, underskirt and overdress in the style of a wealthy womans companion at the time of Henry the Eighth - by May. There are no patterns but we have drawings and she has talked me through the basics - these things are constructed in about 5 layers with boning, lining and I don't know what else. Now if that isn't a challenge I don't know what is! This evening I have whizzed through making a basic toile on my daughter and come home my head spinning.

This has left me thinking that I can sew anything! So although I have been thinking, I can't possibly do that kimono from rtw..I have felt so enthused that I have come home and made the pattern and shall cut out the fabric tomorrow morning. Wheee!

Is the outfit you need to make in the photo etiquette Jan, I wish I could see it properly, this computer has only 18 colours, I go to the library when I want a good look at photos, very frustrating.
A kimono should be a breeze in comparison, Mary's recommended site looks handy for you.
I have made my jeans back pockets, there will probably be lol when you read I have padded out the back pockets, as I have a flat butt and thought this would add bulk, they look like they will sit okay but whether or not they help? I have changed my mind re using the small rivets as denim frays and may fray from under the rivets. I am waiting on an email from a leather suppliers, they have the size I need.
Mary, what colour fabric are you using, and type, didn't you change your mind due to shortage of fabric. What style too?

It not really a kimono but I don't know what else to call it, chinese influenced blouse? Anyway, all cut out and now under construction.
The garments I need to make are not precisely shown in the pictures, just the general style. The overdress is laced to the bodice and the front skirt splits into two. It will have a wide square neck and no sleeves. These are made separately and tied on after. Over the laced-in bodice goes a thing a bit like a breast plate or a stomacher which is flat and boned to squash the breasts - it fits on with hooks and eyes either side. I have to make 2, one in the style on Henry VIII very square shaped, and one in the style of Elizabeth I which has a much more pointed base. Add to this the hat! They are driving off to a fair to buy the material and I am hoping for a bottle green velvet but who knows. Hopefully they will get material for the lining and underskirt as well, maybe some braid, seed pearls etc. And all this to be completed by May....I shall take photos all the way through to help myself with the construction because I see if I pull this off I may end up as a spare wardrobe mistress.

Blouse now finished apart from the hemming and I'm leaving it to hang for the bias to settle. Thanks for pushing this Mary, being a part of this community inspires me to sew.
I have now completed my alloted task - skirt, jacket and one white, fitted shirt and one chinese blouse. I've never made so much in so short a time. Do I send pictures to you Mary? I cannot remember when we were due to have this done but but I need to move on or I face a beheading from His Majesty!

I finished the hem on my pants. I'm so sad.
I went into town and bought a bunch of patterns at the 99 cent sale at Joanns and picked up a copy of the new Sew News.
I didn't look at it. I came home and made some phone calls for work then finished the hem on the pants.
Then I looked at the Sew News and the fancy continuous laps they showed were great. That would have looked good on the slit at the bottom of my pants which by then were, of course, finished. I did put a couple tiny buttons at the top of the slit and they look really good down there, kind of elegant, but a fancy finish like a lap would have looked good. I'd never thought of doing that before.
Oh well -- next time.

Magot, imagine being a wardrobe mistress, expect you would become really fast at everything, pretty exciting for you.
Are you happy with the fit of your pants Dorothy, they sound nice, perhaps you can use the Sew News ideas on another pair.
Tell us how how your going with your jacket Mary. Thank you for starting show and tell, without it I wouldn't be plodding on, it inspires me to keep going.
My jeans need the inside leg seam sewn, have played around with the fitting there and think I need to to take away 1.5cm from front crotch and add 1.5 cm back crotch despite having a flat butt. I bought a size 10 pattern so as to equal the width of current jeans in the hip area, if I was looking in the shop, I would be trying on a 16 (full tummy). I also need to add waistband and sew hems. they are very time consuming to make, but they are looking good with all the topstitching.

I am sure you could make the Mc.Calls Palmer and Pletsch jeans, the instructions are so detailed, and it is very satisfying as you topstitch at the end of each stage, I keep admiring them, I am far happier with the fly stitching now, and think my stitches being too short was the problem. And, using the book PFFRP I have tacked fitted and am really pleased but of course I had to unpick that stitching and turn the seams to the inside. The jeans are pretty tight above the crotch, but I linedance and they tend to stretch a bit, but the process is slow. I won't think about my next project yet. Had a visitor on my sewing afternoon last week, and could have sewn today but DD and boyfriend are here for the day and night, much as love to see them, am itching to sew. And Mary thanks so much for starting this, 3 items is possible (probably) for me and hearing from you all inspires me, I don't know a soul who sews, in fact my adult son tells me I am the only person in the world who does. Mind you he loves his "hoodie".

Barb --
I haven't been at the sewing machine in days myself. I took on extra work and have been chained to the phone and computer. But I need the extra money to buy spring fabrics.
My project is really simple. All the patterns fit well, I know because I've made them all before.
And I'm not doing anything fancy, I'm just letting the fabric carry it.

You give really good advice Dorothy, however as I occasionally buy patterns I itch to give them a go. The jeans, tee, and hoodie jacket I am making are good everyday staples if they fit. I have just graduated up to a size D cup but I alter for a C, so doesn't make much difference when sewing. I gave up looking for rivets so have sewn little boxes with a cross in the middle for re-enforcement like my sons expensive jeans.
I know you have made your pants Dorothy, have you made anything else for sew-and-tell.?
Mary, where are you?

I haven't had 5 minutes, the jacket remains incomplete. However, grandson goes away today for the day and hubby is taking a course all afternoon, so guess what I will be doing. :bg:

All I have to do is slide the elastic into the pants and they are done -- so I can get started on the top this weekend. I actually had some time to sew yesterday and that's ALL I'm doing this weekend.
And I'm going to finish the jacket I was making before I started all this other stuff I'm doing.

I had the house to myself most of the weekend, so apart from necessities I mainly sewed. Finished jeans except for waistband which will probably take some fiddling to get tight enought and comfortable, good luck Mary! Have you and Dorothy much work to finish your jackets?

Well, so much for sewing all weekend. I ended up on the run most of the time. I did get my pants done and I'll probably get the top cut out today.
I end up getting so much going at once nothing gets done as planned.

I can relate Dorothy. I got 2 patterns ready to do new suits and then got waylaid to do costumes for the church easter musical. The suit patterns and fabrics are still nicely folded in a pile and ready to go whenever I get back to them.

I haven't been able to sew for a few days now, so wont be able to until weekend, now Thursday. I still have to do waistband on jeans but if I finish two items for myself by the end of the month I will be very happy. How are you all going?

I haven't been able to do any sewing for over a month. My sewing room was the dumping spot for everything when we painted & rearranged the living room.I had to take out a bookshelf to add a desk so everything from the shelf is in boxes ready to sort & purge. For the rest of this week & most of next I am busy with GS & school RIF program. I need to get DD outfit done by April 2 for a bowling tournament. I am making her a denimn jacket W/ bowling applique & Capris or slacks we haven't decided yet. Wish me luck. I think it is going to take some late nights.

I do wish you luck Barb, so you will be getting your sewing room back plus a nicely painted lounge is that right! My DD has her own tiny flat and her old bedroom here 8foot by 12 foot is my sewing room, BUT she has lots of stuff in it too, hope one day she moves to a house and we will deliver her things to her on the first visit. lol. I couldn't resist Spotlights special on polar fleece, nearly half price today, but controlled myself only bought enough raspberry coloured to make a zip jacket, and I am saving for shoes or should be.

My jacket is done all but hemming. Yahoo!!

Tomorrow everyone goes somewhere so maybe, just maybe I can steal some time. But this house looks like a bomb went off in it. Hmm, think I'll have to close my eyes to some of it. :bluewink:

Good on you Mary great news, finished your jacket, are you happy with it?
I have finished my jeans, yahoo too, am quite happy with them, DS and GF were open mouthed when I paraded them, the fit is the best I have ever worn, with alterations of course. Bought DH some polar fleece today to make a jacket for him.

I got some work done on my top this weekend but I doubt I'll make deadline on this and on a couple assignments for a paper I'm working on. Hmmm -- work or sew, work or sew -- It's going to be a tough week for self discipline but I have to do these stories. They pay to well to ignore. Then I can buy more fabric.

I hope its okay, but I have changed my mind about my jacket, now going to make it a pullover hoodie with a slit centre front, so my tee will show there only. I decided, not being able to buy a good match zip and having to use say black or white, I would rather just do a pullover top. Yesterday, I altered it everywhere I needed too, while all were out for the afternoon, and tomorrow if I am lucky will cut it out.

Isambard Kingdom Brunnel (as we call the bodice) is nearly covered in the velvet and then I have to invent a farthingale so that I can measure for the skirt. Katie has Got No Further with the shift. I needed hand sewing, HAND SEWING !!!!
I am running away to Ireland this weekend - I have a speaking engagement so sewing on hold this weekend. The thought of handsdewing 14 eyelets through 4 layers of material is making my hand ache!

A week of sewing, mmmm, I have cut out my top, was going to sew today dd is visiting for the day, brought her sewing repairs and I taught her knitting. When I showed her my jeans she said, holy cow sure you didn't buy them, not bad coming from a clothing store manager.

Don't worry Dorothy although the end of the month was set we can continue on, we won't get into trouble, and it has been a real help to me knowing others are there for support and doing the same.
I have finished jeans, and because I had the house to myself this afternoon are 3/4 way through my lavender hoodie, my tee will be late.
Anyway, you have been busy working, where are you up to with your sewing? What about you Mary and Jan? Is that all of us?

I think we should do something like this on a regular basis, it seems to inspire everyone to sew more!

Well, I finished in time with my jeans and hoodie, for me to make two items formyself in a month is great. Hopefully, if I see DD and BF on the weekend he will be able to take a photo.
Mary, great idea to keep up show and tell, I probably would have taken months otherwise. If I sew for other family members I get stuck into it, tonight I would have plopped in front of telly with DH instead I was finishing.

Going to DDs tomorrow and will be going to my favourite fabric shop, apart from their usual fabric, especially lots of knits they have big bins of sorted fabric from clothing manufacturers I love diving into them, and of course I will wear my new jeans and hoodie.
Mary, it is autumn here so I will be making warm clothes I have been reading SWAP on SW and am trying to make sure all my colours work together so my wardrobe is truly mix and match I plan to make (and have most of the fabric) black and brown pants with mock turtlenecks the same colours, and winter tops/jackets in red, teal, raspberry and a beigy grey marle. I just need to buy brown fabric for pants and the turtleneck fabrics.
Usually, nothing goes with nothing so I have nothing to wear.
What are you thinking?

And, Mary, how do I send you a photo of my black jacket as promised? You know, if you tell me, you might end up on my doll mailing list. Then you can see how really silly I am making doll cloths and setting up scenarios to photograph.

Ok ladies, settle down. LOL.

I forgot about everyone not being in the same season. Of course, keep your colours co-ordinated and have something in mind for fall. Neutrals work all the time. Figure out what pieces you need or want.

Dorothy, you have to put your digital pictures on a site, gallery or some sort of directory of your own. After you have that, you can send one to me.

I would just love to see your doll clothes.

Hi, it looks like my outfit photo won't be taken until Thurs. or Friday as DD's BF arrived after dark last night, will capture him though. Only bought one piece of fabric yesterday, but going around the clothing factory outlets I was shocked with the lack of quality in not too expensive lines. However, DD bought some great clothes made as samples 70% off but of course she has a greeat little slim figure there was nothing for me! No surprise. I still have to make my tee to go with top and jeans.

Capris are good, I am going to Queensland for a week in October and the weather there will be lovely, I was thinking maybe there is a pants pattern where you can zip off some to make capris, has anyone seen one like this?. It would have to be a pattern by the big 4 or Kwik Sew.
