I am not a "computer expert" by any stretch of the imagination, but we have recently had problems with Norton's 2003 anti-virus program. On one of our (almost new) computers, it kept balking at reading the floppy drive. I took it back to the shop where we got it, and they agreed to change the drive, but the owner who is a real techi, said he did not think that would help. It didn't! Then he uninstalled Norton, and it took off running great. He said they have seen all sorts of problems with something in the updates, and have taken Norton out of all of their computers. His recommendation was an anti-virus program called "Norman", (European) and since they installed it, the same machine has run beautifully, and it updates automatically without causing a moment's interferrence. If it were not doing a great job in most computers, we would be hearing about it everywhere. We are running 2 computers, and in one it worked fine, but in the other it caused problems. There's no doubt it's doing what it's supposed to, but obviously, in some cases (probably a very small minority) it's also doing some things that cause problems. Bill Holman |

this isn't just the anit virus prgram this is the 2004 nortons system works, i have loaded the versions from 2000 on every year and have loved them. one stop fixes ect. so that is why i am finding this years frustrating, years ago i tried macafee and my computer and it hated each other and nortons ran like a dream. i swear these computers have personalities lol. my computer guru friend is coming over today at some point and she is going to dig through that registy to completely rid of it and then install it program at a time, this way if it blows up she knows how to fix it |

They do that sometimes. I think you shold take it out of the registery. Not only this version, but previous versions as well, as it might confuse the new version. The best way to uninstall any program is through the control panel, rather than deleting the files. Finding the correct entries in the registery can be a nightmare. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

i did a clean install, the control panel method still leaves files and tid bits in it, we did the regisrty after going into explorer and files ect and we still had nearly 80 regisrty items in there that had to be manually edited. i finally found the problem in a syamtec support site and they are having software issues with the 2004 works but as of yet have not been able to fix it, it must be a new thing for them and not enough people with the problem so they now have my info to work as well, in the mean time i have taken the program back and just put on the antivirus part and will wait till i see they have a fix for it. my computer hates macafee so i can not even put it on, i installed macafee when we got this computer and it would only boot up in safe mode, so i stay clear of it. |

This is the one that so few seem to know about, but many of the techs I know are using, and it has solved all of our problems. http://www.norman.com/ Bill Holman |

There is another aniti-virus out there called "AVG anti-virus. it's free on their web site and will also check your e-mail. I have this and Norton 2003 on my system and they do not fight with each other. In fact I have had them each grab a virus that the other one didn't grab. and both update on their own. I tried the trial version of Norton 2004 and had nothing but problems with it. I did have a problem with pop-ups duming junk on my system that tracks my site useage and found a program called "Highjack This" on Cnet.com to remove the "comman name" files that would not remove. I saved it to a floppy do I can check my system once a week to make sure nothing has reloaded on my system. My problem now it that I got a HP cd writer and can not get the driver to load on my system that it says that it is compatible with!!! I have tried going to the HP site and I download the driver from there and I am still having problems and HP will not return my e-mails. Does anyone out there have a HP 8200 series cd-writer?? PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU DO, I am running windows 98se. I not able to sew right now, I BLEW THE TIMING OUT OF MY MACHINE, and I can not reset it!!!!! I need to have the machenic show me how to do it. I learned how to re-set the ones at work but the bobbins were all frint loaders and mine is a top drop in. Plus I want to see if he can change is out from plastic to all metal for me. It might cost me more ,but it will be worth it. This has been the cause of many disapointing sewing problems, wish I had never bought this machine!!!! I still have my old faithful that my mom and dad gave me for my 21st Christmas. I have run that one to death and it still runs like a charm!!!!!! |
