Hello I am fairly new to sewing and I have come upon a problem. I have McCall pattern 2947 for an apron and I have come to the point where I should sew the binding. I am at a total loss. If anyone is familiar with this particular pattern and can help me I would appreciate it. Thank you andrea |

Hi Alynmc, welcome to Sew Whats New. Can you tell us what it says about the binding, how wide, etc. MaryW

Thank you. The binding is 10" wide by 40" long cut at angles on both ends. the instructions say: "with right sides together, stitch seam in binding matching notches and solid lines" The notches are on opposite end of the angle, so when you match them there is only a small seam. This forms a tube of fabric. It then says to: "cut binding along solid line forming a continuous strip." the pictures indicates that you cut in a spiral, I did do that and I got a long piece of fabric, but it was completely uneven. I know I'm not doing the best to describe the situation. Thanks Andrea |

You're making bias strips for binding. If you can't make it you can buy it in any fabric store. Comes in lots of colors and widths. It might be a lot easier for you Dorothy |

MaryW The instructions said to attach the binding to the sides and neck of apron, which I did. The straps were so long that I had to cut them down quite a bit to be manageable. So I finally figured out how to do the binding. Its not pretty, but it was a learning experience. I will make another apron soon and learn from my mistakes. Thank you for your interest and I will post any other questions I may have. Thank you Andrea |

Before you sewed the fabric into a tube, you should have been told to mark the cutting lines and then after sewing into a tube, then you start cutting and you end up with a very long piece of bias to use for the binding . you then are supposed to fold it in half all the way down the length and press .. Then you are ready to use the binding.. In other words if you need 1 inch binding width, you should have marked 2 inch strips in your fabric.. (because you always fold it in half)...
