Can you change pleats on the front of pants to darts without ruining the look of the pants?

I would think it would make them look more tailored or form fitting. I usually change darts into pleats because I need the fullness in the stomach area.

Do you think it would make the front of the pants stick out. I don't want to bother going to the work of pulling the waistband off if it won't look right.
