wow I've missed this group! Once in a while I drop in and read a few messages, and I'm going to try to be around more often!

This seems like the looooongest winter on record, even almost beating the winter I got that horrible illness. DH decided he wanted to sell the house and move, not too far - just a little further away north. I'm saying DH decided to move and you're probably thinking - and he runs the house?! - no, we've been happy in this home for about ten years but he's had this itch for a couple of years and some good reasons too - financial; a bungalow for me; more space; more yard, etc. The kids seemed to like the idea too. So that wiped out all of November and December, ugh, anyone who has ever sold their home knows from where I speak - and on top of it I am not in good shape yet so it was extra hard on me physically. Christmas went by in a blur! But the house didn't sell by mid Jan and we hadn't found a place we like enough so we're staying put - the deal was, I'll be happy to move but if we don't we stay here for another ten years.

Then - excitement! - DH bought me an Artista 180 for Christmas!!! We walked into a sewing store to look at embroidery machines - I was thinking Janome - but dh has this thing about Berninas ever since I brought home a Bernina 730 - and this was a floor model deal with all the software and thread and stuff - a "once in a lifetime chance" This was good, and bad in a way, 'cause now I've added embroidery to the sewing and quilting crafts and my UFOS have quickly multiplied. I have spent the past six weeks just beginning to get comfortable on the Artista and it seems I'm learning to sew all over again - the embroidery just takes up so much time when you are learning. I'm really enjoying it, of course, but feel a little pressure 'cause DH wants me to get into selling embroidered items - which I think would be great - but gee the money spent for this investment:nervous: But I keep thinking I deserve it, I do spend all my time at home and sewing/quilting/embroidery is what keeps me sane! They say learning new things keeps you young - at this rate I think I've lost 20 years:bg:

So I'm glad to see familiar names when I take a look at the boards once in a while, and Mary I've sent your site to a couple of people who are learning to quilt when I read their messages on embroidery lists (now there's something - I think I can spend an hour minimum a day combing through several embroidery group email digests).

On another topic all together - Mary I hope your safe and sound despite this horrendous snow storm yesterday (I heard it called a snow bomb?!)

Penny, I am sooo glad you are back. Yes, a snow bomb. What is that???

Thanks for sending people our way, the lessons should give them a good start. What have you been embroidering, I never hear from Joanne anymore. I think she is lost under a pile of thread cones somewhere. :bluesmile

Mary, this place feels like home :) I'm sure Joanne will unbury herself soon enough - like I did, hope she's okay.

Embroidering...hmmmm, I've put little bits on my ds's pjs, a monogram for dd's t shirt, flowers on one side of the bottom of the leg of a new pair of casual fleece pants for myself. Embroidered forever a strip of flowers (tone on tone) which will go down the centre front of a blouse - it took an hour and a half of embroidering time! And I kind of goofed up the spacing between the designs when I re-hooped, so the embroidery will be one side of the blouse only. Right now I'm working on "auto applique" which from the time its taken I think I've could've made a whole quilt! But really, its fun and things will speed up once I figure out all the tricks to digitzing, and of course I have to digitze my own stuff instead of making it easy and buying designs:whacky:

I love the sound of that tone on tone embroidery. So elegant!

Hey Penny! So nice to 'see' you. I was just thinking a couple of days ago that I should write to check on you. Is that a coincidence or what.
Don't envy your weather one bit! And you are thinking of moving even further north? where, to the North Pole?!?!
Any chances of you coming to visit sunny southern California?

Anyways, hope to 'see' you here often now. I visit here everyday.

Hugs,
Adva.

Well, let's see if you live at the North Pole, you very seldom see the sun -- oh yes, I forgot, you see the sun 24/7 for several months -- when do you sleep? And, living in a snowbank can make breathing a little difficult as well as being cold. Oklahoma is too cold for me. :bg:

Hi Patsy, Sherri, and Adva - missed you guys! Of course this has been a baaad winter weather wise, I'm sure we've had it as bad as Oklahama and even the North Pole - a trip to Adva's sounds like a real good idea. When it wasn't absolutely freezing (-25 to -40 C, don't bother converting, just think so cold you can't breathe!), we had snow snow snow. The snow is up to the middle of the trunk of my cherry tree in the front yard. Of course I can't complain because of Mary's situation.

What have you ladies been sewing or quilting?

I belong to two quilt groups Penny; been helping teach beginning quilters. We now have them snadwiching and getiting a sampler (12 - 12" blocks) ready to hand or machine quilt.

By the way, we've had a really mild winter in Oklahma with very, very little snow and only a few really cold days. In fact, dh and I have been in the yard working this afternoon -- close to 70 -- but we're supposed to get some much needed rain tomorrow.

I also belong to two groups, one is our local quilt guild. I am the membership chairperson, so enjoy the monthly meetings with speakers and community service, and also the comeradery of the board members.
The other is an online Thimbleberries group. We have montly block lotteries, birthday fq club, and soon we'll have a Row x Row fun.
Besided that I've been qulting up a storm lately, making a black/purple quilt for my daughter, charity quilts, and more.
Tomorrow I'm flying to Israel to visit my folks for two weeks. I'll take a project with me and try to work on it there, although I don't think I'll have the time, with visiting family and friends.

I'm so glad you're back, Penny. Hope to see you here more often.
Hugs,
Adva.

Well, Patsy, Oklahoma is a whole lot closer than California, and warm enough for me! Glad to hear your both busy...I've thought about starting some individual classes but haven't got up the nerve yet. We have a collection of vintage electric sewing machines and my husband sold a few this winter to some ladies where he works....none of them knew how to to sew, really, or quilt, and all ended up taking classes at a quilt shop. They did ask if I'd teach them but I'm just not ready for that yet. Have a safe trip, Adva.
