I am starting a jacket for my mom. Pattern New Look 6322, view C. I haven't decided if I am going to put the pockets on this or not yet. Here is the situation. She lives 850 miles from me and has some tough fitting issues. I just bought FFRP last week and so I do have some guidance from that. I will have to do some flat pattern measuring since I don't see finish measurements except for bust on the pattern anywhere. My mom has short arms and is big around the hips. Her bust is 36B, waist 37 and hips 47. So I am wondering, can soil separator paper be stitched? I wonder if I should try to do something in a mockup of sorts and send it to her before I cut into the fabric? She also doesn't want this too long on her hips. That is one of the reasons that I am wondering about the pockets. I have never really done any pattern alterations other than switching pattern lines yet. I am going to start trying the FFRP ways soon, but that is going to take time to perfect. Thank-you all for all your help. Jolene Jolene

I have more info and more questions now. Since this flat pattern measuring is new to me this is what I have so far. On the back piece, which there is a center fold, on the size 18 from the seam line to the center back fold line is 12 inches at the hip and 11 5/8 at the waist. I think I have to mulitipy that by 2. I know that there is no way I can make this a size 18 at the bust though with her having a 36B bust, so where do you change lines at to accomadate the 37 waist and then 47 hip on the back piece? Then I am looking at the front and wondering how to measure it. There is going to be a placket of buttons and button holes on each side so wouldn't I measure from the side seam line to the center front edge because there won't be a seam there but thinking as I am writing I bet I have to measure it from the middle of the placket row because of the buttons? I am thinking a 12 or 14 through the bust since finished is 42 and 44" , I will take any thoughts on this. Right now I am just tracing off pieces and trying to figure this out. I love my mother but this could be a very educatational lesson for me. Thanks, Jolene Jolene

Your mom has very tough fitting issues. I think it would be worth it for her to get measured by someone close to her, even better to find someone who could make a sloper for her. You could use this to adjust other patterns you want to make for her. It would be expensive but she would probably be thrilled to have clothing that fits her. Even better would be to invest in pattern making software. It costs a lot, but does all this more accurately and automatically. Your mom could probably get measured at a local users' group and then you could enter those numbers into your computer. |

I don't know what a sloper is, I guess I still have a lot to learn. I know this is going to be hard. I have them cut now on SS with a 14 bust, 16 at the waist and 18 through the hips. I am going to get some muslin I guess tomorrow and stitch this up and see where to go from there. Jolene Jolene
