Hello, I am new at all this. I took a sewing class and loved it so much. I bought a Brother XL- 2230 sewing machine. I cant find any info on this particular model, like consumer reviews and such. I didnt want to spend a whack of money on my first machine, it cost me $169 canadian. What I am wondering is if any of you have any advice on this machine I bought or if anyone has used this one and has something to share with me about it? Also is this the machine a beginner should be using? I dont have a clue as to what I'm looking for at this point. I only know the very slim basics right now. Thanks. |

Amber, I am sorry I don't know anything about your machine. I also have just started sewing again and am learning to do it the right way this time. I have found that the boards, and I go to several have really helped me a lot. I think the main thing is to just take your time and if you have a question, come and ask. They have always been able to help me and give me the tips I needed. I refer to my machine manual a lot and have also bought a couple of books that have helped so much. I highley recommend Fabric Savvy by Betzina, Sewing with Knits by Long, and Fit for Real People by Palmer and Alto. I also have a Complete Book of Sewing I think that one is Readers Digest. I want to get Pants for Real People also. There is a lot to learn and I still feel pretty inept but everyone is so patient. Have fun, I am! Jolene Jolene

Hi Amber, Congratulations on your new machine. I did a search for Brother '2230' sewing machine and several websites came up. It is a mechanical machine with 11 built-in stitches and an easy buttonhole. In the USA, it retails between $89 - $99. It is a basic beginner sewing machine. As your sewing skills improve, you may want to upgrade at a later time. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

Personal experience here, but the low end brothers are "decent" machines. They will not last you a life time, but they make a good straight/zig zag stitch, and a good way to "get into sewing". My personal opinion is that a decent entry level machine is a good start, then you have an idea where you want to go (embroidery, quilting etc).
