I wonder if any of my fellow Canadians have purchased things by mail from the US. I would like to order a few items from Nancy's Notions but wonder if there would be duty on top of the exchange rate. Has anyone had experience with this?
Lise
P.S. Would this be better in "General Sewing Talk"?

Lise, here is fine. I have paid duty on some purchases. Others seem to have included it somehow. I think it depends on how they decide to have it delivered.

I think it used to depend on the amount of the order. If it stayed under $ 40, there was no duty but you have to pay Canada Post a handling fee -- I think it's $ 5.00 plus GST.

I to would love to order from some of those US sites. They certainly have more choice than we do.

Who do you ask to get this info? Do you have to call customs with the total before you place an order to see if there will be duty?

I have ordered things from the US a couple of times and found the place selling the item never knows if and how much theduty is. I have heard scary stories of people ordering things and the duty was more than the item. By then it is too late to send it back.

Karen,
I wish I knew the answer. Perhaps when I have more time I'll try to find Customs regulations on the internet.

I usually just order what i want and have the Customs fall where they may. you might want to check the gov of Canada's website for duty rates.

I have tried going to the Government of Canada, Duties, Customs, Excise etc. It's gobbledygook!! I am no further forward.

Hey Lise,

I checked the Canada Customs site...not a whole lot of help but it does warn before ordering make sure you know the total cost of duty and taxes.

The way I read it they add the GST and the PST at the border with the duty...nice guys. They do say that with the Free Trade we have free duty on things made in the US. But again they warned that just because it was purchased in US it was not always made there. They said to get it in writing if it was made in US in case of questions at the border....just seems like way too much work for me.

Maybe I will plan a week-end in the US to make some purchases.

What you really need is an Amarican friend to make the purchases and mail to Canada as a gift!!

Hi Karen,
You're absolutely right about what I need. I used to know someone who lived in the States and worked in Canada, crossed the border every weekday and was known at the checkpoints in both countries. Never had a problem.
By the way your registration shows you as living in Winnipeg "ON". Is there a Winnipeg in Ontario or has it just shifted a little to the east?

Lise,

Boy do I feel like an idiot! No, your right it is Winnipeg MB not ON.

When I updated my profile I forgot to change the province :bang:

I'm originally a maritimer..what can I say!! We just moved here from Trenton ON last summer.

We are a military family...never in one spot too long! Maybe someday we can settle in one place...can hardly wait! Oh well I have to do curtains and decorate with each move, so I am getting better at my sewing!!
