I am just getting back into sewing. My husband bought me a new Janome sewing machine in Jan. I can see the need at times or maybe a better word is want of a serger. My old sewing machine, a White Jeans Machine, I bought at a garage sale for $50.00 is still working and has never had to be serviced. If I saw and wanted to buy a used Serger at a garage sale, what do I need to look for? I know NOTHING about sergers at all. Input would be great. Thanks, Jolene Jolene

A serger is a wonderful sewing aid. It can give your garments a professional look. Buy the most expensive serger you can afford is my recommendation. If you don't use all of the features at first you will at some point in the near future. I've only had a serger for a little over 2 years and recently upgraded because I wanted to do a lot more. These are important features in my opinion: 1. Differential feed capability 2. 4 or 5 thread capacity with 5 thread being the best 3. Auto tensions with a manual override. 4. Coverstitch if at all possible. 5. The ability to purchase additional presser feet. With my serger, I have created formal wear including chiffon overlays; created belt loops and spaghetti strap tops; and ruffles and shirring for gathering full skirts plus hemmed fleece baby blankets with a flatlocking stitch. I also recently made a border print fleece jacket with facings and set in sleeves totally on my serger. Each part of the design match up perfectly. I surprised myself with that one. I only used my sewing machine for the top-stitching. Even the buttonloops were made on the serger. Enjoy!!! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.
