I bought my daughter a sewing machine for Christmas, off HSN.
She used it and then broke the needle, we went to walmart and bought new needles and can not get the bobbin thread to catch from the needle thread. I lowered the needle by loosening it and pullin it down a little and I got the thread to catch, but it still will not sew. The stitches are not catching.
?????? Help!

Hopefully this is something simple. What brand and model is your machine? Have you been able to use the machine at all?

The first thing to check is the bobbin. Some bobbins feed clockwise, others counter clockwise, it would be nice if you just need to turn the bobbin around. Are you using a bobbin and needle that came with the machine?

Another possibility: The needle could be in backwards. In most domestic machines, the flat portion of the needle goes toward the back of the machine...also make sure that it is in all the way.

What usually happens when the bobbin doesn't catch is that the needle and thread are not meeting at the right point so anything that alters that point can be a problem. Also, on almost every machine on the market, you have to be sure and bring the thread from the bobbin up to the top of the plate by moving the hand wheel while holding the top thread, then pull both threads up and out of the way toward the back of the machine.

Thanks Pam!
I will check the bobbin to see if it is in backwards!
The needles are not the needles that came with the machine, but the bobbin is.
The sewing machine is a Euro Pro.
The needles I purchased were Singer brand.
I did not see any information in the box for reordering needles, so I assumed they must be a standard size.?????
