I am using simplicity pattern 5524. I feel like an idiot. I've used the pattern and cut the fabric and interfacing according to instructions but they came out entirely different shapes and sizes. So I did it again and this time they matched up but they were too short (the first set I cut the fabric was the right length but I already fused interfacing that did not match up at all and when I tried to remove it I think it ruined the fabric). Why is cutting so difficult for me? I've been doing so well until this point. I now need to recut both the fabric and interfacing but I am running low on fabric so I want to be sure I get it right this time. Any suggestions? Does the interfacing need to match up exactly? |

Usually if there is a separate piece for interfacing, it is designed not to extend into the seam allowances. This makes it easier to turn and lay flat when you are sewing. Also, some interfacing pieces are for one side of the waistband - again to just give body but not to add bulk. Try matching the notches and possibly you will find that the interfacing piece should stop at about 5/8" from each end and should be placed more in the middle of the waistband piece, so it is 5/8" from the top and bottom as well. It is basically centering the piece on the waistband so it is not in the seam allowances, if that makes sense. In that way, when you sew it, it will turn easily and the corners should turn easier if you don't have the entire waistband interfaced right to all the edges. Hope that helps. Joyce |

Sometimes interfacing seems to shrink up the fabric. Here's a tip that has always worked for me. Fuse the interfacing to the fabric before you cut. Just cut a piece of each bigger than the pattern piece, fuse it, then lay the pattern on it and cut both together. Be sure you mark the grain line so you can match it up when you are ready to cut. Thank you both so much for the tips. I'll give it a try. |
