I want to make some curtains with grommets. Has anyone any experience with this, Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have found the plastic grommets that snap on. While relatively inexpensive I'm worried the material will pull away from the grommet due to the weight of the curtain. It will be a lined curtain made of lighter canvas material. Has anyone used these with success?? The metal ones may be a better choice but I can not locate any here in Wiinipeg or even Canada. Does anyone know of a supplier for the metal grommets? I would prefer it to be Canadian. The US has tons of wonderful sewing supply sites that I truely envy but with the exchange, duty,etc...it gets too expensive. It's snowing here so it is a good time to sew. |

You should be able to order those through Atlanta Thread & Supply Company. I have had very good luck ordering unusual things from them. They have many things that the commercial and home seamstress can use. You can order online.

Hey Lise, I don't know the exact size but you may of seen the plastic ones I have at fabricland (fabricville) in the drapery section. I think they are about 2" across in diameter. Have you ever used these or know of someone who has tried them?? Karen |

I found a site you might want to investigate. They have grommet tape for draperies...might save some money in tools. The site is Homespun Fabrics and Draperies. There are instructions for using their tape and the grommets which are large enough to fit a curtain rod through. I don't know if this is the exact application you are seeking, but it looks like a nice solution. I did not check the pricing on their items.

hey Pam, Thanks for the info on that site...it was exactly what I was looking for. Too bad it was out of my price range but they certainly gave me two ideas on how I can make these plastic grommets work for me. I guess I will take the plunge and use the plastic grommets I already have, with some fusible interfacing and hope for the best. Wish me luck!! Karen |

I made some drapes with grommets for a store in Calgary. I used quite large industrial metal grommets and the drapes were hung on tension wire. I had to rent the "grommet installer" but it was worth the time saved. They have several sizes and metal colours and the "grommet installer" is adjustable to the size you choose. They may have a place in Winnipeg or you could contact them in Calgary and see if they can help you. Cansew 3763 - 19th Street NE Calgary (403) 291-4494 Hope you are successful. |

Hey Lindsay, Thanks for responding. I had forgotten all about Cansew. When I had a home biz I used them for thread all the time. We do have a Cansew here in Winnipeg, which is great, but do you know if they will deal with a home sewer...I no longer have my Business. Also do you remember the cost of the rental and the grommets?? Thanks again. Karen |
