The reason I ask this is that when I learned in Jr. High, the last time I have had a sewing class and I am now almost 46, was the you cut out the notch. Now the patterns have the notches pointing in, is there a right way to do this and why do you do it the way you do?

Thanks again in advance,
Jolene

Everyone has their favorite way, but I usually either cut the arrow point so that it points out toward the seam allowance (this makes it easy to match the notches) or I use tracing paper and mark them that way. I usually have found that cutting them outwards in the diamond shape is best for me because it gives an ample notch to match accurately.

I usually cut the diamond pointing out from the seam allowance, not into the seam allowance. Although I have heard of people who cut a small slit into the seam allowance at the point of the notch. My teacher was very cruel to us if we cut intothe seam allowance because it might a) fray and cause a weak seam and b) gives you little room for fitting if you ned to sneak the seam out a bit.

One of the ways that I mark notches is to use a placement dot or mark with a soapstone pen. It's much easier to see and to match correctly than trying to move my hands around the arrows. Placement dots can be used over and over. I buy them at one of the dealers for $2.00 and get a box of 50. Well worth it and saves on aggravation. Hope this helps a lot. Happy Stitching!
