I just thought I'd write about this...I'm usually quite happy with my McCalls and Kwik Sew patterns but once in a while I splurge and buy a pattern from one of the independent designers. They are so worth the money! (I'm Canadian, these cost $12 each US, and I ended up paying $9 duty when they arrived - can never figure out that part ) After I paid the duty I thought, gee I think I did the wrong thing and I shouldn't have bought such expensive patterns...but... The two patterns are by Diane & Lois Ericson (Revisions patterns). I got the "Just Pockets" and the "Peony" blouse/vest and wrap skirt. The pockets pattern is 60 pocket patterns - patch, welt, inseam, free hanging, window, inset, and flaps. What amazes me about these patterns, and what makes them such a great treat, is that you don't just get a boring instruction page - do this, do that. You get lots and lots of creative ideas on how to alter the garment's style, hems, button treatments, how to sew frogs. The skirt can be made as is, or with a zipper, lined, suggestions on where to put pockets in unusual places. The vest and blouse can be made 12 different ways! The guide in the pocket pattern not only has really clear pictures of how to sew the pocket but also ideas on where to put them and how to decorate your garment using the pocket or just the flaps. Its just so much fun and so inspiring just to read the guide pages - almost like a book there's so much info packed in there. So, now I have to find some pretty summer fabric...the peony blouse is lined and I can picture it two layers of a gauze or chiffon. Penny http://community.webshots.com/user/pennypins

By the way Penny. You can buy "some" designer patterns from www.timmelfabrics.com They are here in Halifax. The Revisions patterns can be bought from Joanne's Notions there in Ontario. She has no retail outlet, just mail order and a website. I will see if I can find out what the URL is.

If you like the look of tailored garments without all of the fuss, check out patterns from Loes Hinse and Textile Studio. Classic looks that are easy to put together. This is especially helpful when one is employed fulltime. Most items can be made up in a few hours or on a weekend. Loes Hinse's patterns need very little tweaking and fit great. You can check these out on several websites ... www.patternshowcase.com , www.loeshinse.com , or www.textilestudiopatterns.com. I have made up the Brussels skirt in 4 different fabrics, the Capri Jacket, the Basic dress and Basic pants. I have also made up the funnel neck shell (can't remember the name) and the Skirt Trio. Have fun! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

I love the look of Loes Hinse's patterns! This time, I was looking specifically for an interesting wrap skirt to try to replace my summer standard gathered gored skirt. Mary, I've ordered from Julie at Timmel Fabrics - she has some great patterns in stock! Because of the wrap skirt thing...and then I saw the pocket pattern... (on the Revisions website) so I had to do it the long way. Penny http://community.webshots.com/user/pennypins
