Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and new to sewing, and was wondering if anyone had experience making swimsuits. Are they especially difficult to make? Can I get the material at a regular fabric store? Any and all advice for a newbie would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Hi and welcome.
I sew all my own and DD swimwear. It is not that hard if you have some basic sewing skills. I would recommend that you start with a basic style and I would go for a kwik sew pattern as the fit and instructions a usually clear and easy to follow.
Now the fabric you need a 2 way stretch lycra that is suitalbe for swimwear. By 2 way I mean it has stretch going in both across the material and down the length. Some colours it is a good idea to line and usually the swimwear lining lycra is found with the lycra materials in the fabric store. You also need swimwear elastic this stuff retains its elasticity when wet unlike the normal stuff we use in our clothing. There are several types of elastic .
Well I hope that that is enough to get you started

How new a newbie are you? I am still struggling with sewing sports bras, which stay hidden. With 45 plus years of sewing experience I am not ready to tackle a bathing suit, which is exposed and requires an especially good fit.

If you can't find the swimsuit elastic at your local store, you can order it at www.homesew.com for a pretty reasonable price. They also have a great selection of notions and other specialty items!
