I had volunteered to do sewing for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. I needed iron-on sticky stuff to repair a tear in a chair arm at their new resale shop. I went to the cleaners next door to the resale shop trying to bum a piece of iron-on stitch-witchery from the alterations person (who was not there). The man running the shop was Pakistani or something, speaking too softly to hear and I could not understand him.

I decided to find a Wal Mart in that neighborhood and got what I needed. On back to the resale shop where I sat down beside the chair and made a fairly decent repair but then set the iron down on the carpet just a second to turn it off. The iron stuck glue-tight to the brand new olefin carpet. I jerked it up and nearly died--there was a perfect melted impression of the iron, right in front of the check-out counter. I told Stephanie who works there, I could make a circle of iron impressions to look like a flower but she didn't go for that. They may not call me back.

:bolt:

whhoooppsss......maybe you could go back to Wal-Mart and get a real cheap, small rug to put over the iron mark...it'll look chic and cover the mark at the same time...making EVERYONE happy !

Accidents happen...I know I'm the biggest accident happening around here.... !!! :bg:

Accidents happen. Everyone has been in your shoes at one time or another, don't worry about it.

How does it go? No good deed goes unpunished?
I agree with Chrys... buy them a small rug to put over your boo boo.

I think we all have had a few moments in our lives that we really wish we had never volunteered for and were anywhere else but there and I'm sure they have had a few as well. I couldn't help but laugh and some where down the road you will as well, but I am sorry for the feelings you must have had at the time. Like they say don't sweat the small stuff.

I was horrified the moment I saw the melted impression of the iron, and the thing is, it is about six feet out from the check-out counter. I immediately tried scratching at it but it was melted solid. The good news is I was able to get all the junk off the bottom of their brand new iron! Thank goodness for Teflon.

If it were me, and I understand this was for charity; but I would offer to have it repaired. If it is new carpet, they most likely have some remnents of it left. It's amazing how they install carpet, you won't be able to tell the repair is even there; I feel horrid for both of you! But I think the rug idea is a good one too!

Sounds just like something I would do. Try to do a good deed and it turns out a disaster! ACK!

I agree with trying to find a carpet remnant and repairing the burned area. You might even find a matching sample square at a carpet place. Your repair of the chair will more than make up for the burn mark. Move forward, offer the repair, and think of it as a learning experience. There is a need for community service workers in every community. You will be blessed in the long run.
Happy Stitching!
