Hi Folks,

I am looking for a sewing machine that does a chain stitch. I understand Singer and Kenmore machines used to have this feature, but I a not sure if their machines still do.

I have a Kenmore Elite and it doesn't do a chainstitch.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Thanks,
Toronto, Canada :)

cera welcome to sew-whats-new. Almost all of your sergers will do a chain stitch, but off hand, I don't know of a sewing machine that will sew a chain stitch.

The only sewing machine that I know that does a chain stitch is the Sew Cutie. It's one of those small (almost toy like) sewing machines and it costs about $39.99. Personally, I think you would be happier with a serger because there are so many different things that a serger can do in addition to the chainstitch.
Happy Stitching! Marty

Hi Ladies,

I thank everyone who replied to my post. I do have a serger (Bernina 1100 DA and I love it!), but unfortunately it doesn't do a chainstitch.

The reason I want a chain stitch machine, is to baste seams for trying on. I have used the basting on my sewing machine, but it's not the best. I got this chain stitch idea from someone else on another list and it seemed ideal for temporary seam sewing during fitting. I usually use pins, but DH is not very happy with me going "can you please pin the back". :). So I would use it solely to baste, as I know chain stitches are not very secure.

Thanks again.
