Would anyone be interested in having a craft section on this site. By crafts I mean fibre and fabric projects. Not paper bags, glue and pipe cleaners.

Perhaps beading, or needlework of some sort. I am not clear in my befuddled head what I want yet.

What about useful things like those cloth makeup bags or cloth boards with ribbon that you slid pictures behind and use as a bulletin board. I'd love to have the directions for making those. They look easy but are they? I'm all for sewing crafts. The beading sounds wonderful. A beaded bag for evening wear would be nice to make. Even though I haven't gone anywhere formal for some years now it would make a wondeful gift for someone who does formal occasions. Let us know Mary I'm in.

Susie,
I just made a bulletin board but I didn't add the ribbon to slide behind. What I did was get a frame, cut a board to fit, glue some batting on, wrapped some fabric and hot glued it to the back. I have pins on mine with ribbon so I can hang siccors, measuring tape, etc. Works and also adds a nice decorative touch. Did it all in about a half hr.

Oh yes Mary, would love to learn other crafts. Will try almost anything once.

Shirley,

I would love to learn how to make the one for pics because when I move and build my new house I want to make a room for the girls and the boys, (grandkids) for when they come to visit and I think I'll make a heirloom one for the girls to hang their special little pretties on. The one you suggested sounds like a good idea for that too.

Violet --
I'm not an expert on soft doll making -- I'm a beginner. I just got a pattern for 15 inch fashion dolls and started my first one. I finished the head and face, which was the part that worried me. Just as I started to figure out the hair I realized the date of the costume I'm making -- 1916 to 1920 -- means a turban type hat of some sort so it saves me a lot of hair issues.
I already have ideas for other eras for dolls bouncing around in my head. Anyone who can offer tips on dolls would earn my gratitude.

Susie

I have made a couple with the ribbons on them for pictures and am about to make another one for my son. I will try to take the time to take pictures and write down the directions as I go and post them.

Susie,
You can do the same thing with ribbon. Just add it. Measure from one bottom corner to the opposite top corner, then decide how far apart you want to space the ribbon. Once you have the ribbon one way just start on the opposite side and go the other direction. I think hot glueing the ribbon on is good enough and in the centre of where the ribbon crosses you can hot glue some nice buttons or anything you like. It's actually a fun project. If you want the ribbon more stable just put a lit bit of hot glue under where the ribbon crosses. You can thread some nice thread also and tie it. . You don't even need a frame. You can cut a piece of board, not to thick, and when your done finish it off by glueing a nice piece of cord around the edge . Let your creative juices flow girl. :bluewink:

Love the idea of soft dolls. Tried to make one once with a lace dollie, just saw a picture, no directions and wasn't quite happy with the results. If anyone knows how to make these would love to learn. They aren't real big and I thought they would look really nice come christmas time to hang on the tree.

I voted yes! I need to branch out and use up more of my stash/scraps. The grandkids are all taken care of for the summer, and I'm done making new scrubs for work. I need to make something besides clothing. In the past I have made Raggedy Ann dolls and stuffed animals for the grands and really enjoyed it. I need some fresh ideas and motivation. I follow the stash challenges closely but due to time conflicts I don't participate but do extra sewing for myself during them, but I need some ideas for easy to do gifts for adults and children.

Mary,

When you say beading do you mean making rings and necklaces or adding beads to clothing?

Mary, I'd love to do fabric crafts, but when will this start ? I had surgery on my right thumb this past Wed. & not sure when I can use it. I'm right handed so kind of handicaped right now. Won't see the Doc till a week from now so can't ask him yet. Theresa

Thanks for asking about me Susie. Yes, I'll be ok. Just takes time to heal is all. I think the stitches come out Thursday, at least I hope. It was minor surgery, I had a ganglion cyst under my right thumb that was quite large. It's just a pain not being able to use my right hand for awhile but it should be ok soon. I'm bored out of my scull not being able to do much right now. I never could just sit still. The fabric crafts sounds like fun & I sure enjoy reading what everyone makes. Think I'll be able to do a little maybe.Who knows may even get a few extra Christmas gifts done. Theresa

Theresa,

I have been at a stand still for around 2 months with the surgery on my eyes and all too. But last night I stayed up all night cleaning out my sewing room and making room on my cutting table so I can cut again. That was the hard part. Everything was all scattered on top my cutting desk and I had no where to cut out patterns. I can see the top of it now and finally cut out something to sew. LOL

 I know what you are going through not being able to do anything and wanting to. Hope the time goes by quick for you.

I love the idea of a craft page. I made a soft doll a couple of years ago for a granddaughter and am thinking of making another for my new little granddaughter Michelle (7 months old). I made my own pattern and machine- embroidered her face; made her a removable dress with attached slip, and some little panties.

I have also made (on the machine) bowls from covered cord; neck-roll pillows; pillows with machine yarn embroidery; Christmas tree ornaments on the machine (about a dozen different kinds, most of them included in my book); miniature dolls and soft little animals; soft balls; cloth how-to books for small children, etc. MariLynntx

Yes, love to see it.
When I'm not sewing something,I love to use up my bits and pieces of fabric for sewing crafts. Like small items of wearables or decor things. A while back I was looking for pats. to use up my
leftover fleece, another thing I wanted was something different
to sew up for bottle bags. Of course we ladies like things for our
kitchens and someone else always comes up with a different
place mat etc. so I'd love an forum on this stuff. My SIL is trying to interest me in rag rugs of which there are umpteen ways so I'd
love to see a site on this. Wow I turned out to be a wind bag.

Hey, NanCee, I like your ideas a lot and I can think of so many things to do for placemats. I discussed quite a few crafts and how to do them in my freemotion machine embroidery columns that are archived on SWN and accessible to anyone, if you are interested in looking at them. MariLynntx

NanCee, go to the Opening page where they have little pictures and sort of preview the week. At the bottom of the page it says (about in the middle of the line) Practical Advice: One of the topics is MariLynn's Embroidery. Click on that and it will take you to the beginning of my topics. There is a bio first and then a list of subjects. Just click on any of them and it will take you to it. I allow anyone to read and/or print them. I also originally started the Embellishment site, but I forget where it's listed. I'll have to find it and post you again. MariLynn

Embellishing Ideas is under Bric-a-Brac. Of course, none of the original stuff is there any more, but I posted under beading and also some under Beading a Wedding Dress several months ago, but most of the original stuff was from questions asked about various things, and about my book. I love craft work, too, and have been thinking about writing about it when I finish revising my cookbook. Or maybe I should do the craft stuff, first and then the cookbook, since I am being very slow on it. MariLynntx

I have a simple beading project in mind and maybe um, never mind, gotta keep something secret. :bluewink:

It has been so hot here and more in store so says the

brown as burnt toast I've become, I should say flaking as
well.
All my projects have been put on hold but I look forward to

First I apologize to all for getting off the craft topic on this site.
Iwanted to get to the topic Marilynntx mentioned but it was
not on the page I get on my pc...first when I click on the sew-
whats -new , up comes the site page with loves (sorry cant
remember her name and so I then click on the(home) in the
line above (her) and get the list of topics etc. Tonight I typed
in the name rather then clicking on the site and lo and behold I got an entirely diff. home page and found Marilynns page and
after reading her bio I feel 100 times dumber than I thought I
was. I will have to change the address so I get the right site.

Thanks for all the help and sorry about the confusion I created.

Now for crafts and lots of them.....Amen

NanCee, that is so strange! But wierd things are normal for my computer. It is doing things here lately that the computer people tell me don't happen...for instance, I click on Outlook and there my Inbox is, with a list of personal folders beside it....the trouble is, that the list is completed about half-way down the page, but instead of stopping there, it says Personal Folders again, and MOST, but not all, the folders are listed again. I have tried deleting the excess folders, but they won't delete. Sometimes my e-mail goes into one folder and sometimes into another and it is maddening! Marilynntx

I accidentally (and don't ask me how, I don't know!) sent my post before I finished it. I was going to add that you shouldn't feel stupid; I have to yell for help from my daughter Lisa who is a computer whiz for a very big company in Houston, or Shauna who has learned a lot from her sister Lisa about computers. Shauna teaches art and computer graphics at an elementary school in Austin. She lives only about a mile from me here in Bastrop and sometimes we do craft stuff together. I helped my 5-yr-old grandson make a rocket the other day and it really worked! So now we are back on crafts....MariLynntx
