Well it's been about 1 1/2 months since me and my husband started eating healthier to try to get his cholesterol down. We're doing really good so far and we've both lost a few pounds. I can finally get into some skirts and pants that were getting a little too tight.

Congratulations. Eating healthy foods become a habit. I'm a vegetarian and my husband absolutely refused to eat any of my meals at first...then he tasted them...and now he seldom eats meat. So, don't despair, pretty soon you will look at unhealthy, fatty, sugary food and shudder at the thought of eating it. Trust me.

Good for both of you, that is great.

I wish hubby could agree on this one, he is almost 60, overweight and high blood pressure

Oh Brother, the Easter candy is out and I messed up and bought some for the grands and I ate some and now 5 pounds later I wish I hadn't. Back to weight watchers. I really have to change my life style. It's so hard when eating around here is comforting.

I think it helps a lot when everyone is trying to eat healthier. I changed the way I grocery shop and I cleaned stuff out of the house that we don't eat anymore. The kids still eat a few treats, but I don't bake any more high fat sweets and we try to eat more vegetables and fruit. I've also found some good dessert and muffins that are low in fat and healthier. I try to find recipes that have something healthy in them like oatmeal, whole wheat flour, fruit, and bran.

After a few weeks of eating healthier it becomes a habit and I don't even miss all the junk food I used to eat.

I used to go to Weight Watchers, but I hated having to keep track of everything I ate. Now I just cut back, but I don't keep track of every calorie and fat gram.

Congratulations!!!! DD#1 has been doing weight watchers for a month & has lost 15 lbs. she said she usually doesn't even get hungry anymore, except when she knows I am cooking.when we are having a big meal she saves her points all day. I don't think I could do that. I was starting to lose weight last spring Then my dad got sick & I did lose because of the stress.I am still down 5 lbs. but I am home more & tend to eat when I get bored or frustrated. I have to get my sewing room clean so I can sew instead of eating. The computer does help. I can't eat while typing. As soon as it warms up here I am going to start walking even if it is only a few blocks at a time. I am so out of shape & I am taking the Girl Scouts to Mackinaw Island this summer which means lots of walking. I hope I make it. I set my goa;s small to start. Like 1 pants size or wearing something I haven't worn for a while. Wish me luck

Good luck MO6, The weight battle is something I don't think I'll ever win. Eating is my only way to calm my nerves since I quit smoking.

I have been overweight most of my life. I did get down to wearing a size 14 before I got married. Then I gained a few pounds with each child. As soon as I would lose most of it I would be pregnant again. With the last one I kind of gave up. But now she is becoming an overweight teen so we are going to work on getting healthy together this summer. WE had planned on doing it last summer but I was never home & the kids ate a lot of fast ?convenience food. This yr I hope to do better.

I was 116 when I met my husband I was 15, when I got married I weighted 125 at age 17, I'm 5 foot. Then I got pregnant and was 140 when I had the baby but after he was born I gained 30 more pounds because I quit smoking. I then went on weight watchers and got back down to 125 and that's when I got pregnant for my second son. I got back up to 175 - 180 then I got down to 150 dieting then I got pregnant for my last son. Then it's been yo yo ever since. About 10 years ago I started working and lost a lot of weight and was back down to 148 and felt that was a good weight for me, then I had to quit work because of the stress, my pressure went up to 210/120 so I quit work and gained again 25 pounds. Then I quit smoking again and here I am at the 200 mark and miserable. I really need to get out the house and do something. I need a life change for me to quit eating. It's too hard staying in the house around all this food. Hubby is trying to not gain since he quit so maybe we can do it together. He's only got around 12 pounds to lose I'd love to lose around 60. New Orleans is famous for their food and healthy eating has never been practiced here I don't think. LOL :nah:

Well Dr. Phil keeps saying that diets don't work and it sounds like a lot of you are proof of that. I think all emotional eaters need something else to replace the eating and snacking. Go for a walk, volunteer, sew something?? Although we eat very healthy here my biggest problem is inconsistent exercise since my brain surgery. I can do the tread mill for a few days in a row and then I run into several bad days and can't do a thing. The summers are better because at least I can go for a walk then but here in Ontario in winter I'm pretty much housebound. Luckily I'm not an emotional eater but the combination of menopause and the brain surgery has slowed my metabolism down so after being underweight most of my life I am struggling to lose 10 or 15 lbs.

So, no more diets ladies (and gents). Time for a new life style which will include healthy food and exercises....easier said then done but I think we all need to set that as a goal.

I am definately an emotional eater. I catch myself eating when I'm not hungry. When I'm bored or nervous about something. Even when I worked I ate out and still kept the weight off but when I'm home ugh!!! it's a battle everyday to stay out the cupboards and the fridge. I love to cook and make things that is my problem, and around here large portions are at every restaurant then you feel guilty about leaving the food there and not eating more. If I take it home I eat it later in the night and that's not good either. I'm going through menopause so that's part of this problem along with not smoking. I'll just have to change my life around to being busy when I'm home or out of the house and busy. One way or the other I'm going to do it and soon.

Ya know girls, i've watched a lot of people loose a lot of weight on one diet or the other over the years and as soon as they drop the diet and go back to normal eating, they usually gain more than they lost. The point is that unless we learn to eat right (smaller portions and healthier food), the weight will stay on and more than likely, increase. So here's a good way to flush that weight and keep it off. Water!! You got it, good ole H2O!! I already walk every evening since I have a little dog that demands to be walked twice a day. DH does the morning walks at 6:00 a.m. every morning and now that the weather is warmer, I'm doing the evening walks. My downfall is Cherry Coca Cola. I live on the stuff. Starting tomorrow, I'm only allowing myself one cherry or vanilla coke a day and the rest will be water. I'm not, thankfully, but if you're diabetic or borderline, water will go a long way to helping keep your insulin levels balanced. And, Mary, water and exercise is also one of the known recommendations for high blood pressure and cholesterol. So break out the water ladies and gents and lets get those legs limbered up.

Susie, my DH is also an emotion eater. His father was an alcoholic and the way his mother tried to solve all the problems in their lives was to feed them. His mind tells him that when he's tired, stressed, or whatever, that food makes him feel better but to the contrary, it makes him feel worse because it puts unneeded weight on him. We're doing a lot better with his eating and I'm also trying to shop better and keep temptation out of our way by not baking, etc.

Patsy my Dad was an alcholic and he wasn't abusive to us or my Mom the emotions of living with someone who had two personalities was rough. My Mother would try and do everything perfect and my Dad would screw it up and then blame her for being the one that was disfunctional. She was of course but so was he. They were both loving people but we had the alcholic roller coaster we lived with. He'd get drunk and then try and get her mad before she could blame him for being drunk. I am the only one of my siblings that ate my emotions away. The rest did other things to the excess. I have to deal with my emotions and then the weight will come off following that.

Susie good luck with the weight loss. I would also gain weight when I was pregnant then lose some then gain it again. Until I started exercising the weight would not stay off. I walk 5 days a week rain or shine for about 4 miles each day. The only days I don't walk are snow storms, when I'm sick, or if the wind chill is about -30 or lower. In the last 8 years I only put on about 15 of the 60 lbs. I lost. I know the exercise has helped me keep my metabolism up because usually I would put the 60 lbs. back on in a few months.

bren I think that's a wonderful idea. I just was told my cholestoral (sp?) is a little high and so I also need to loose about 15 pounds. It might motivate some of us more. At worst case we will feel better
