How To Dress When You're Over 50

Many of us "Old Folks" (those over 50 or hovering somewhere around 50) are quite confused about how we should present ourselves. We're unsure about the kind of image we are projecting and whether or not we are correct as we try to be nice and conform to the fashions that the designers in NYC, California and/or Paris inflict upon the world.

So I made a sincere study of the situation and here are the results.

Despite what you may have seen on the streets, the following combinations DO NOT go together:

1. A nose ring and bifocals
2. Spiked hair and bald spots
3. A pierced tongue and dentures
4. Miniskirts and support hose
5. Ankle bracelets and corn pads
6. Speedos and cellulite
7. A belly button ring and a gall bladder surgery scar
8. Unbuttoned disco shirts and a heart monitor
9. Midriff shirts and a midriff bulge
10. Bikinis and liver spots
11. Short shorts and varicose veins
12. In-line skates and a walker

With these guidelines I'm sure we'll all be LOOKING GOOD!

LOL Susie :bg: If only some people owned full length mirrors as they get older. I'm seeing some of these older gals with the paunchy overhangs and bulging rears wearing the low rider jeans. What a hoot but apparently they see something different that the world looking at them sees.

we have a fair number of teenage girls round here who do the midriff bulge and hipsters thing - they don'y seem to care! seriously though, short skirts and varicose veins ONLY works if you were the support tights , OK?
( and me just with my ear pierced, again - I'm trying to catch up with Aimee)

I have two holes in each one of my ears and that's enough. I couldn't stand the last two I know I couldn't do the nose thing or the lip or tongue thing.

For some reason, to me anyway, the midriff and hip bulges look a little more unsightly on older women than they do on the young girls. Maybe it's because the young girls don't have the wrinkly, saggy skin to go with the bulges.

I saw a lady who was definitely over 50 with 7 earrings in each ear, pierced up the outer edge. It made me cringe. I love to be stylish but not to where I lose what little dignity I have left. :bluewink:

After fifty, and then some, dress comfortably, but with style. Drop the teeny-bopper clothes and wear smart clothes. We all love earrings, but only in the ears; I have two in each and that's plenty. The days of granny shoes and house dresses are gone and now we have very nice looking separates and pantsuits. The main thing is to 'Act Your Age.'

Theresa,

I'm with you. I was just talking to my sister in law tonight about clothes and such. She is worried about buying a bathing suit to go on a cruise in June. She's not a size 14 even and is worried about her hips and bulges. I told her I don't care about all the bulges as long as I can stay cool and comfy. I know what's in my heart and that's all that counts. Having fun is on the top of my list of things to do. I got out on the skating floor with my tennis shoes on last year and did the hokey pokey with the GRands. That was fun. I didn't care what I looked like. I bet the grands won't ever forget it either. They are too young to be embarrass yet. They laughted and had fun. I also rode jet skiis the year before last on vacation. I'm all for having fun as long as my body will let me.

Theresa,

My Mother use to say, "You're as young as you feel" and she was right. Sometimes I feel like I'm 12 again and sometimes I feel like I'm 112. But when I'm 12....................look out!!!!! Most of the time my mind tells me I'm young and my body reminds me I'm really 52. LOL

I know that Ricky Martin song. I have it on CD. My Grands keep me thinking young. They listen to that music and get me to tapping my feet and shaking my hips (earthquake) and now I own quite a few new young artist songs. "Follow me, everthing is going to be alright" Uncle Cracker!!!

My Mother, Oh God how I miss her, was hip for 75 when she died. She knew all the young artist of today's generation also. Must be in our genes.

I have been in a rut the last few weeks and I am beginning to feel better the last two days. Depressed I guess is the word that would discribe the way I've been feeling. It's like coming out of winter into spring when there is new hope.:bluesmile

Today I'm going to Hancocks and pick up some of their 2.99 Simplicity patterns that are on sale this weekend. Thrus - Sunday Sale. Oh yeah I'm feeling better, I'm looking forward to spending money that's a good sign. :bg:  :bg:

I have a tongue ring and I now wave a partial denture. ^ front teeth were knocked out couple years back

I had a belly button ring with an C section scare but it got riped out when I put on a seight lifting belt. OOOOOCCHHH!

I refuse to grow up

I wear whatever I want to. Most of my clothes tend to be long as I teach, but I have some short stuff too. I exercise a lot and try to keep my weight stable and I think I look good in just about anything except the Brittany Spears look. No halter tops, bikinies, or super short shorts. My arms aren't great so usually no sleeveless things. Dress young - feel young. Dress old and feel old.:bg:

Someone said if you were old enough to wear it the first time, you are too old to wear it a second. The mini skirts and thick soled shoes were popular when I was young. I loved them, but not now.

Right on Mary, I wore mini skirts & GO-GO boots.I had all 4 of my children then but was in my 20's, & was slim. Wore a bikini also but wouldn't dream of those now even though I'm not heavy. There's a time & place for everything & now is NOT the time for me. I don't dress like an ole lady but do know where to draw the line. You'd be surprised how some do dress here though. If only they could see how others see them. Theresa

I still wear my jeans, T-shirts & sweat shirts too & I'm over 50. Nothing wrong with that at all. I just don't wear bikinis, mini skirts & go go boots anymore. My friend that was in her late 70's still wore her jeans. I don't dress old for sure, just don't dress like a teen even those clothes would fit me. I really don't think age has to do with clothes but common sense does.

Well, I am 77 and have some extra bulges here and there, but I just try to look as good as I can while also being comfortable. Can't wear high heels because of the bad accident 5 years ago that left me walking with a cane (hey, no complaints because I'm out of the wheelchair and that's what is important!); don't wear midrift shirts or tops because of the bulges. Mostly wear knit pants or ankle-length skirts with coordinating overblouses (and always earrings) and give thanks for the mild winters in central Texas and A/C in summer! It's so nice here now that I haven't even had my A/C on yet this year! Last spring my son Jay took me on a Caribbean cruise for 10 days and I learned to snorkle. I'm a widow and I like doing anything I want to anytime of the day or night. If I want to get on the computer, or sew, eat some ice cream, draw some new designs, or read at 3 a.m., that's what I do! I seldom cook any more, but I still sing a lot and play with my keyboard. I left my large piano at my son Jon's to encourage him to keep playing & maybe give the little ones lessons. I sang at Jay's wedding in Hawaii last Thanksgiving and was offered a job, but I came back home. MariLynn

This thread makes me sad. Why shouldn't women be allowed to flaunt it, even if they aren't a "perfect" size or if they are older? When I was in high school (10 years ago), it was only the super-skinny girls who were "allowed" to wear clothing that showed off their body... There is no way anyone with even a tiny pudge belly would allow themselves to show it! So these days when I see the more curvacious girls doing it, part of me thinks, "Right on, girl!" (The other part of me HOPES these girls are showing it off for the right reasons -- they like the way the clothes fit, and they like their bodies, etc -- rather than the wrong ones -- because they saw it on Cosmo magazine, to get guys' attention, etc.)

As for older women, I think they should wear what turns them on, not what they're "supposed to". If that means tight pants and cleavage-bearing shirts, well, fine! And if it means comfy sweats and a "World's Best Grandma" shirt, fine as well! I've seen some sexy older ladies around here with tasteful noserings and low-slung Levi's.

That said, I am 27 and I don't wear midriff tops or anything like that. I just hate to see women judging eachother so harshly, because that is part of the reason so many women today have body issues.

Remember ladies:

Growing older is mandatory, but growing up is optional!!!!

I wear jeans and t-shirts all the time, even to church. I broke over on Easter and put a dress on, and no one knew me at church!!! I am 46, have 3 kids and 2 grandkids. I am the one that taught my kids to skateboard and rollerskate. I am also the one (much to my husbands disaproval, he is very proper) that taught my kids to make armpit noises and to shoot peas through a straw!!! :bg:

My oldest daughter is afraid to let me watch kids as she is proper now like her dad and is afraid of what i will teach them. hehehe She says she just can't wait to see what i will teach them next!!! But I have fun.

So ladies, have fun, and let your inner child out to play sometimes.

I think growing up should be as mandatory as growing older. I am older....a LOT older, but I am also grown up. I can look at myself in the mirror and think, "I don't look good this way and I don't want to show myself in public as completely tasteless about my appearance"....I like it when people tell me I have on a pretty dress, skirt, shirt, pantsuit, or whatever. I enjoy being told I have beautiful skin and that my white hair sets it off. So I wash my face and put Vit. E oil on it every night and brush my teeth (all of them my own) AND my hair. I wear clothes that minimize my bulges and figure faults. It's the logical and mature thing to do.

Sure, we all have faults, but we don't have to emphasize them to prove we are emancipated. I was emancipated BEFORE it was stylish, but I've never been a slob and I don't intend to start now.
I had 7 children and 16 grandchildren and I play with them and tell them about things they ask me about because if they are intelligent enough to ask the questions, they deserve truthful answers. I also teach them that just because they hear ugly things doesn't mean they have to repeat them because someone else thinks it's cool...they should think for themselves and always consider other people and what they think. I resent the fact that some people think that if you laugh and have fun, you are immature.. That , in itself is an immature outlook on life..My beloved GM taught me so early I cannot remember how young I was.. "Pretty is as pretty does." and "beauty is ONLY skin deep."
I believe that you should be neat and clean, but I do not believe God meant us to worship beauty like so many people do..I will never lose my inner child and I let her out to play any time it is appropriate, because it feels so good..I believe in doing what you can to help others and also in trying to control any urge to being mean-spirited.. I really believe this is why nobody wants to believe my age..even though I am short and heavy..(and seldom wear makeup)...

I don't use a cream, Mary. I buy pure Vitamin E oil at H.E.B (a huge grocery store) or at the health product store here in Bastrop. It absorbs quickly into the skin and doesn't feel oily or greasy on. I put it on my hands, too, as well as my face and neck. It takes very little at a time. I also take biotin for my hair and nails. I have long nails and they are very tough, hardly ever break off or split.
I have always believed it's easier to laugh than cry, and I laugh a lot. My oldest child, my daughter Suzannah, once said to a friend of mine, "Mother's greatest fault is that she isn't serious." My DH used to say I had a weird sense of humor and I said he had NO sense of humor, but we managed to hang in there for 54 years!! I'm still not serious, even about singing or sewing, and I still do a lot of both... MariLynntx

I'm making a purple skirt and blouse right now for a good friend and also for myself, and we each bought a red hat last week, because we've been invited to join the local Red Hat group. My hat is the basic stetson (in red straw) shape, with a big red tulle bow I added to it! I expect it will be fun! MariLynntx

I've heard of these groups. Lots of red hat fabric around now.

There is a local gift store that has one corner dedicated to the Red Hat Society. Purple boas and lots of glitzy jewellery. Cute as can be.

I "think" the Red Hat Society is a group of women who have brought up their family, kept house and home together, volunteered, done all the usual things to do with being a wife and mother.

Now that the most of their responsibilities have either left home and they have more time, they enjoy themselves totally with others of their own age and stage in life.

If anyone knows more about this, please post.

In a perfect world, I would now be able to afford to and have the skills to make myself a basic wardrobe out of the finest quality fabrics. Soft wools (no scratchy fabrics allowed), cashmere, medium weight rayons to be cut on the bias ala Vittadini. Suede might be something I'd try (if money were no object).

The reality is that my 1X size is not the flattering shape for the designer patterns (or any patterns really). I have to make an adjustment at the shoulder to accommodate sloped shoulders, an adjustment in the pants pattern for sway back and an in the bust point for my apparently dropped bustline.

It amazes me what the body is capable of morphing into as I age. But I look on it as a pattern-fitting challenge. And, it has become a bit of a business for me as I help my friends and relatives adjust their patterns correctly, too. The Lord moves in mysterious ways...:bluesmile
