I am interested in purchasing a Dess Form to help me get my clothes to fit well.
When I was young and leaning to sew, I had a Mother and two sisters who were always able to help but now my home is filled with lovely men, but they are far from interested in Mum's sewing activities!
Has anyone had experiences good or bad with Dress Forms of their own and could offer me some advice on what I should look for and what I should avoid? :nervous:

First of all, unless you have the perfect figure, forget the "adjustable" forms at JoAnn's Hancocks, etc. Look for Uniquely You, Twin Fit, Fabulous Fit, or look into making a duct-tape double.

Personally, I tried the duct-tape double and was less than pleased. It was 'me', but I hated using it and they are ugly.

I know have a Uniquely You that I just love. I had to work with it a bit to get it to look like me, but now that it does, I would not trade it for anything except a custom-made form by an expert.

Do these come with padding to add lumps and bumps? Even with adjusting for matching my circumferences this wouldn't begin to provide for where I bulge and how that affects how things hang.

We can, but my question is whether this brand provides materials for that. I know I've seen one advertised that includes padding materials and a cover to smoothe the surface, wondered if this brand has that or if you have to figure out how to add the padding yourself.

We could ask the company who sell's them...

I read where one off the girls made oval pads and placed them where you need them with tape...

Fabulous Fit makes a fitting system of foam pads that can be ordered separately for $89.00 for the set. However, their dress forms are quite expensive $327.00 and up. You could buy the Uniquely You dress form for $130 and order the fitting system from Fabulous Fit for $89.00 and have a wonderful dress form that you could come pretty close to making it your exact size.

You can make the Uniquely You somewhat smaller, it depends on the size range you need to start with. The fitting cover makes it 'shaped like you'. I used some batting to fill mine out in a few places that needed it and serrated knife to take off some foam in a few places also. It can be customized very easily. Even the Fabulous Fit will not work if you lose a lot of weight.

They also have a body wrap for $15 on the site !
It increases the size for you on a smaller form , so that you can use one form for multiple sizes.
Check it out at
http://www.fabulousfit.com/personalset.html
Click on the tab that says body wrap on the top.

I use the Dritz dress form and added padding where needed. It was about $125 but well worth it especially since it is adjustable.
I used quilt batting to get the right padding and then made a cover for it. Works great and I can remove the cover and adjust the padding if my weight changes. Happy Stitching! Marty

This is truly a serious question.....

DH got me a Uniquely You for Xmas. I'm still losing weight so I haven't form fitted the cover yet. The only issue I'm having is the boobs. At 43, mine aren't quite as high as the ones on the form. I'm wondering if I can slice them off and lower them a bit. Has anyone done this?

Thanks,

Debby

I've decided I have to have a dress form, because this fabulous dress that I've made does not come anywhere near to fitting correctly, and while many things I can fix the problem by pin fitting on me and such stuff, this dress just would not work to do that, and I want to fix it.
So, here's my question:
My big problem area is my shoulders, and so I'm trying to figure out if the normal dress forms you find in Hancock and Joann would work for me, or if I need to go for the more expensive ones. (I'm really hoping, that the Joann ones would work because I just got a 40% off coupon for anyone item, and in my opinion this would be perfect).

I also used quilting batting to 'modify' my dressform, then wrapped it up with fusible interfacing, gave it a shot with my iron so that it would adhere but not permanently, and made a 'sleeve' out of spandex to cover it and make it slide.

Works great and if I need to add or remove batting (heheheh, remove... I must be dreaming...) I just pull up on the interfacing, stuff some more, and give it another shot with the iron...

Not as glamorous as some other methods, but VERY cost effective...
