I have a pair of pants that my husband bought me that fit very strangely. The waist sits up so how that it reminds me of maternity pants. When I wear the pants where I feel comfortable the crotch hangs down to the middle of my thighs. Is there a way I can alter these to fit better? Will this be too involved for a beginner to take on?

Try folding them over at the top until they feel about right. It sounds like the crotch depth is off. If they are elastic waist you can pretty easily cut off some at the top and sew a new casing. If they have a waistband it will be trickier, involving tapering the center front and back and side seams and removing and replacing the waist band.

When you shorten the top what happens to the leg length? You will probably need to let out the hem or even add on at the bottom when you take up the waist and reduce the overall length.
