How do you prep crepe fabric that is machine washable for sewing? I am not really finding it in any of the sources I have and I must not be looking in the right places on the Internet? Thanks, Jolene Jolene

I treat it by the fiber content. Like I would anything else with that fiber content -- of course color and weight have influnce. Dorothy |

Unless I am having one of those "duh" days, (and that is very probable) I don't think there would be any preparation. Are you talking about pre-washing?

I was talking about pre-washing. I wanted to get the shrinkage out of it before I started. These fabrics to me are confusing since I don't know them well yet. For instance the crepe, just says crepe on the bolt. I know it isn't wool, but I don't know the other kinds of crepe. Then I am also using a polyester, that is all it said, 100% polyester. It is slinky kinda if that makes sense. For me just starting to really get into all of this, I am really scared about this project. I am starting to cut out now. This is a dress, jacket and skirt I am planning to make out of this. This is the most money yet I have spent on material for a project. I am not sure about needle selection, seam finish, what to use for a hem. The dress will be made out of the poly and the jacket and skirt out of the crepe. I hope I didn't bite off more than I can handle. Deep Breath! Jolene Jolene

Joelene sounds like you've got a polyester crepe. Don't worry a lot about the polyester fabrics having to be pre-treated (prewashed) before you sew them. There is very little if any shrinkage in polyester. However, if want to be on the safe side, just put them through a cold rinse in your washer and then a perma press setting on your dryer. Slippery is a better description of crepe fabric. It is a lightweight and can be washed in warm water with a mild detergent. It does not like a hot iron. Use a universal H needle in either size 60/8 or 70/10. A 2mm (12 stitches per inch) is recommended and an extra fine cotton wrapped polyester thread or long staple polyester (100/3) thread. A straight stitch or roller foot is recommended. Use very fine pins, weights or well sharpened shears. A rotary cutter, mat and stabilizer plus lightweight zippers are also good. Using a mock french seam or french seam give the best look. Zigzag or serge the edges for a neat seam finish. These hints are taken from Claire B Shaeffer's book "The Fabric Sewing Guide", page 71. Hope it helps. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

Hey, glad y'all enjoyed the books. I love Claire Schaeffer's insight and information. For those who live in the Knoxville, TN region, she will be having classes at Best Sewing Center in May. Sure wish I could travel to take one of her classes. Oh well ... maybe one day she will come to Memphis. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.
