Could you recommend a couple of essential sewing books one should have? Here in Spain I have not been able to find anything worth having so I think I will order one or two from amazon, but as I will not be able to see them I will rely on your advice. Somebody has already recommended Fabric Sewing Guide by Claire Schaeffer. Selene Selene

I also have Simplicity's Simply the Best Sewing Book. It has lots of drawings. It has tips from buying patterns to making adjustment to patterns for a perfect fit. Basics for working with fabrics, how to choose, straighten, naps etc. Has how to's for most sewing needs, even covers using sergers and has numerous tips thru out to make sewing easier. I bought this book for my daughter in law when she started sewing too. I also have The Ultimate Sewing Book by Maggi McCormick Gordon. This has actual pictures and covers tools and equipment, sewing basics, dress making, and home furnishings.

Fabric Sewing Guide by Claire B Shaeffer is a must for every sewing room. It's pricey but will save so many headaches in the long run. One of my favorites that has great information is The Essential Guide to Sewing by Nancy Zieman. It has a lot of color close-up photos that teaches the technique but lots of sewing tips. In the back, the glossary of sewing accessories and notions is worth the price of $16.95 (USA). Sewing 101 is great for beginners and is recommended by the Home Sewing Association. I love collecting and reading sewing books so my list could go on and on ... Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

I love my sewing books - I have most of the ones already suggested. One though that I use a lot, and I was suprised at how much info it had, was Sue Haussmann's Sew Fast Faster Fastest. I was hesitant to buy it, because I have watched her show which is very much a Husqvarana Viking promo - but this book is fantastic. Takes you through every step of garment construction - sleeves, collars, zippers, waistbands, etc. and gives you three ways of sewing them. Fast, faster, fastest! Great illustrations, easy friendly text. I refer to it alot. Also, if you're interested in a specific garment, Taunton Publishing (those who do Threads Magazine) has a series out "How to Sew Pants" and "How to sew Tops" (or something like that). These are great on fitting, sewing and changing design of pants and tops. Penny http://community.webshots.com/user/pennypins
