I would like to make my sister some baby burp cloths. She has put in a request for the kind that are hour-glass shaped. Does anyone know what she's talking about??? It's been 9 years since I had a baby and I just used good ol' cloth diapers! |

First burp cloth I ever had was that shaped.. It was a gift for my first son, 43 years ago.. about 24 inches long from end to end.. goes over shoulder and hangs down same distance front and back.. part at shoulder is middle of hourglass..(most narrow) about 5 to 7 inches then spreads back out to about 8 or 9 inches and thats all there is to it.. serged all the way around outer edges. the front part had a border about 3 inches up from bottom with "BURP BURP " embroidered in letters about 1 1/2 to 2 inches tall.. Now , I told you DS is 43 now and that was a baby gift, so you may need to experiment a little with the measurements.. mine was made from a terrycloth , I believe, but the thread loops were not loops, but felt like little bumps.. Maybe it was not a terrycloth at all.. Its been a long time ago..and since my Mom ran a day care for years and I helped her its been hundreds of babies ago, I copied it so many times, that is the best I can remember.. Hope it helps.. I've made those before, just draw your pattern on a piece of paper. Experiment until you get it just how you like it. I used a saucer to get the shape of each end and tapered it to the thickness I wanted for the middle. Mine were made with 2 pieces of brushed cotton or terrycloth with a thin plastic liner in the middle. they were very nice! I used decorative trim around the edges; but embroidery would be very cute. I like the one that says "Spit happens" lol But I agree with Momma; a good ole cloth diaper works great!. While you're add it momma why not add a matching bib? Laura

I also made my own design for these for my new grandbaby. I made blankets out of flannel and the burp cloths to match. I made my first pattern on tissue paper. I was then able to fold the tissue to suit the size I wanted. My son wanted some that were bigger for his shoulders. (I actually think he wanted to make sure he was covered!!) Anyway they were cute matching the blanket. I also used a fancy stitch around the edge of both the blanket and cloth using verigated thread. Jay |
