Getting ready to lay out the jacket to go with the dress I completed and have a question. I have determined, I think, that I am using a size 14 for the jacket, but I need an 18 through the upper arm area in the sleeve. So I know with this multisized pattern that I can get the 18 then by mid forearm I will go back to the 14 but what size do I use for the cap that gets fitted to the jacket bodice?

Thanks,
Jolene

Very good question Jolene. I have the same problem with fitting my arms. I cut out a blouse and it's still on my dress form because the sleeves don't fit my big arms. The rest of the blouse fits.

If the fullness in the shoulder is enough, you may be able to cut on the smaller line in the upper sleeve (which would match the pattern you are primarily making) and the wider line in the lower sleeve; just making a slight lowering at the bottom of the sleeve when you set it in. The problem is that if you add too much to the upper sleeve, you may have problems making the sleeve fit without pucker.

This is a problem that I face. My shoulders are a 16 and my upper arm is a 24+ so I've struggled with getting sleeves to fit.
Finally, I found that I had to split the pattern in the vertically from the joining point of the sleeve cap to the middle and add the required amount in 1/4 inch increments. Then I had to lengthen the side seam and shorten the sleeve cap for a perfectly fitted sleeve. My book "Fit for Real People" gives a lot of detailed instructions with photos. For me, it's a must on my cutting table.
Happy Stitching!

After looking at this again, it wasn't as bad as I though. I may have even been able to get by with the size but I am just going to cut out the sleeve cap the size of the jacket bodice and then go about a 1/4 in higher, the next size in the upper arm area and then go back to the 14 through the rest of the sleeve. I will see how this turns out. I have enough extra material if it is a flop to do it again.
