What is twill tape? And what can be used in it's place. Any substitutes? The skirts I am making for the grands calls for twill tape. I know it has something to do with the waist area but what is it's purpose and is there anything that can be used instead of the tape?

Thanks for your help in advance.

As usual I opened my big mouth before looking into this subject further.

Mary you are a so efficent. The answer to my first question is twill tape is used to Stabilize seams so they don't stretch. You had the answer in the sewing lessons section of your site. But I still have a question can anything else be used do the same thing? I forgot to get the twill tape and I'm in full swing of making this skirt. Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks

Twill tape is a narrow binding tape that, unlike bias tape, is stronger and unfolded. The reason it would be used in the waistband area in the seamline would be for stability. In tailoring, it was often used in areas where bias met straight grain or where there were bias areas that had a lot of stress particularly in the shoulders. I would think that there are several seam stabilizers on the market now that might work, but you have to consider the amount of stress in the area. The twill tape is a little heartier that most of the seam tape stabilizers (clear) that I have seen. Twill tape will probably not be available in many colors, usually black black or white and maybe a few primary colors. You frequently see it in purchased woolen fitted skirts.

I don't know if middy braid could be used or not?

Thanks Paroper,

This is skirts for my grand daughters. I think the reason for the tape is the skirt is somewhat of a hip hugger type. It has a side zipper and hooks and eyes for the closures. It definately needs some stablizations in that area. There is no actual waist band really it's just the waist has a facing that folds down. Hence the need for some stability.

I have seen (and used) one inch grograin ribbon for the facing and all in a hip hugger skirt....works fine...gives stability. You just sew it on top of the edge of the waist seamline, turn and tack at the seams, darts and zipper.

Thanks Paroper I know what you are talking about now. I've seen this in RTW things. I'll try that I have some ribbon. Will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again.

Hope it works well for you. My very first garment was a hip hugger with grograin in the waistband (1967). (I thought my teacher would flip), but it turned out to be my favorite for a number of years.

Look through your stash for a fabric with a selvage resembling twill tape. Try google image for a picture of the tape.

I can't believe it!!! I was just going threw my box looking for beige seam binding that I thought I had... it was twill tape ...so I was going threw a book looking to see what it was used for and decided to ask you wonderful gal's ....and there's my Bud Susie asking the same thing I wanted to know LOL . well thank's for the answer...Susie I will give you my twill tape tonight if you could give me some beige seambinding LOL.

I have decided to change all the neck band's on my t shirt's...I don't like that band on the neck it's so high... I did one but I need to wait to get the right colour thread tomorrow for the rest of them... Has anybody got any Idea's what you can do with t shirt necklines ...besides just turning it under... or How would I go about making a V neck on one....And I am shorting them to .

Thank's

Great minds think alike Bud. :bg: I have some beige (Oyster) seam binding. Let's meet half way to exchange my twill for your seam binding. LOL Wouldn't that be hard for me to explain to Raymond why I need to meet you? :bg:

Bren,
If you have a stretch stitch or even a simple zig-zag stitch on your machine, putting a new neckband on a t-shirt is easy.. I cut existing bands off all the time and put a new one on.. I have a phobia about anything too high up on my neck. I feel like I'm choking.. after you cut the old one off, measure the size of the neck opening. you will need ribbing that is 2/3 of that measurement. If you do not have ribbing, use part of what you cut off of the bottom, but if you use that, you need 3/4 of the measurement. Mark the neckline with 4 pins spaced equally . Mark the ribbing the same after you seam the short ends together and fold in half lengthwise, then pin the new band onto the neckline matching quarter marks. Sew using a stretch stitch or zig-zag stitch.. I am assuming you do not have a serger. If you have a serger, just serge the new one on, its quicker and easier..
Most fabric shops have ribbing in several basic colors.. you can buy it by the inch.. a standard neckline ribbing for a t-shirt is about 2 1/2 to 3 inches wide..I have applied a v-neck also , but I have not done it without pattern directions.. It worked well ..I cannot tell you how to do it, though, its too complicated..Maybe there is a sewing lesson somewhere that covers that..

i use ribbon like that I also use the growgrain ribbon for boning casing in corsets.

My question is .... twill tape also tailors tape. the pants i amke for hubby call for tailors tape to re inforce the seams in the crotch. i use twill tape people at the sewing stores say they have never heard of tailors tape.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Twill tape is sold at Hancock Fabrics and comes in several widths.
I had to buy some last week for my DD's tailored suit. It will be used for the roll line of the collar. It's great for the inside of men's trousers. For the question about the neckline on T-shirts, use your serger to finish the edges with a coverstitch.
Happy Stitching!

I have found a great substitute for the narrow twill tape.. I use quite a bit of it because I make so many t-shirts and the pattern I use (kwik sew) says to stabilize the shoulder seams with it. A few years ago in the fabric shop one day, I was complaining to the manager about the lack of variety in color choice in the 1/4 inch twill tape, and she said "why don't you use that 1/4 inch ribbon on those spools that we sell in so many colors for 2 or 3 for $1.00 all the time... One of those times when you feel ---duh-----... I have been using them ever since and very seldom have to buy any, now that I have a variety of colors on hand..You know the kind I'm talking about.. Comes in 1/8, 1/4, or 3/8 inch widths satin ribbon in many, many colors.. Fabric shops, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and WalMart all carry it in my area...

Libby what T shirt pattern in kwik do you use...

I do have a serger Libby... I know how to put ribbing on but i wanted to do something different with the neckline ... if I put the cut off piece from the bottom on... does it have to be cut on the bias... or can I just cut it straight across.

My kwik sew pattern is more than 15 years old.. I don't know where it is right now, so I can't give the number.. Its just a plain t-shirt w/ long or short sleeves and 1 optional pocket..sm-med-lge, & X-lge.. all in 1 so I just make a tissue one for whichever size I need..
BTW-I called Lowe's .. They have that soil seperator cloth for pattern duplicating and a roll 24 inches by 300 feet is $19.00. I'm going to get some over the week-end..Then I won't have to worry about having something to trace my pattern on..
