When you see a certain fabric or fabrics, is that what inspires you to make the outfit or is it the pattern that inspires you to sew? I think I see the pattern and want to make it up. The fabric is secondary. Usually there is more pull from the pattern for me. But, lots of times I will see co-ordinating fabrics and know right away how I would use it. MaryW

For me it's about evenly divided among fabric, pattern and ideas I get that must be translated into finding suitable fabric and pattern or pattern alteration. |

For me I would have to say fabric. I buy fabric I like & then decide later which pattern to use. When sewing for DD it would be pattern. We find a pattern & then find fabric from my stash to fit it.

Most of the time it is a pattern...only occasionally I find a fabric first. However, I don't usually buy the fabric unless I can picture in my mind how it would look made up.

Got to be the pattern - the last thing I sewed I bought fabric and then invented a pattern, quite new for me!

Usually I buy fabric I like then bring it home and put it on the shelf. The idea for the project comes sometimes when I'm staring at the tons of fabrics on the shelf, or when I see a pattern that seems to fit, often when I find another fabric that will go well with one on the shelf or sometimes I come across across a new technique in a book or something. And sometimes, just sometimes, the idea starts with something I need -- a black jacket, a winter coat, at least one shirt to go with those pants, a gift for my niece or daughter -- that kind of thing. I start off with a pattern, then I buy some fabric - but then once I've got the fabric and have had a good look at it, I may change my mind and use another pattern that I think may be better for the fabric! Isabelle English sewing journal: Kitty Couture

Dont laugh but it is the fabric... and if it is flashy and more stretchy then the ideas come quicker. I love the swimsuit fabrics. I have to say I purchase alot of patterns but I make more of my own patterns. I have to also say that with all patterns I alter them in some way. They never look like the original. The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

for apparel it's almost always the fabric, whereas for quilting it's often the pattern. when i get a clothing pattern i really like i experiment with a lot of fabrics. i mostly sew for toddlers and babies and have a lot of friends with children to spread around my finished goods.

Oh, I like to envision myself in a new outfit and then search for a pattern and fabric. Since I love tailored looks that are easy to put together, I use as many tailoring shortcuts as possible. My theory is to "make it tonight, wear it tomorrow" or it just might sit forever waiting to be sewn. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

I'm with Dorothy, I usually buy fabric I like then decide what I'm going to do with it. I guess you might say I have a pretty good stash. I never leave the fabric store or WalMart without buying at least 6 yards of fabric. I'm a really bad fabriholic. I see the fabric and invision a blouse or skirt for the girls. or tops for the girls. |

This is a hard question. Most of the time I would have to say the pattern. I will buy the pattern thinking how cool something would be. BUT.... If there is some nice material that catches my eye on sale, I will get it and then figure out later what to do with it.

I guess I do both but mostly I buy fabric I like knowing that "I'll use it someday". But then again, sometimes I find a pattern and go gather up the material for it. Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.
