We promised the kids a vacation this summer, but hubby's brother's wife is not doing well. (The one with cancer) So..... we've decided to travel to Virginia Beach this summer to see them for a few days and thought we'd make a vacation of it for the kids on the way there or on the way back home. I ordered brochures for Virginia attractions. I've thought about Busch Gardens, or Colonial Williamsburg. Maybe even Washington D.C. Where are all of you planning to go this summer? |

Bama, They also have a great water park near Williamsburg, I think it's called WaterCountry USA. Williamsburg was great and there is also a Aquariam in or near Norfolk. Do you know where you are going to stay while you are there. we had a great place right on the beach and they have a small kitchen right in the room so you can cook and eat there without high prices for the food. Let me know if you want the name of the hotel, I will have to hunt it down. Sewhappie They also have a mini amusement park on the beach and on Friday nights they have family movie night ( Wal Disney style) right on the beach strip. I just remembered the hotel "Station One." |

The boys and i will enjoy movies or the water park but not much else. The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

DGS will be turning 6 in July and all he wants from Grandma is a 5 night camping trip at the State Park. He wants to cook hot dogs on the fire & sleep in a tent. So that will probably be it for me. We are taking the Girl Scout troop to Mackinaw Island for 3 days & I haven't been there since I was 1 yr old. so that should be fun if 4 12- 13 yr old girls don't drive me crazy.

"Mom of six" ...we went to Mackinaw Is last year and had a ball. If the girls have bikes you should all take bikes. We biked around the island twice and up into the interior once. It was a full day and we were exhausted but it was the best way to see the entire island. You can rent bikes there but it gets a bit costly. We haven't decided on what to do this summer. Likely not much as we are saving to go to Florida this winter. We want to rent a condo somewhere near Tampa/St. Petersburg for a month. This summer will likely be a lot of day trips, biking and hiking. Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

Sewhappie, thanks for the info. I'm not sure where we'll stay yet. I talked with my SIL yesterday. She wants us to stay longer with them and go with us to some places. She sounded so excited. She wants to see the kids at Busch gardens. Maybe she'll be able to go and I can hang around with her and let hubby and his brother ride the roller coasters with the kids. I hope she'll be up to it by then. She recently finished some radiation treatments. Anyway, I thought it might be fun to just get in the car and go, stop whenever we want, and not worry about reservations. |

Bama, there is also a Kings Dominion 60 miles north of Busch Gardens. It has even more roller coasters than Busch Gardens. There is a childrens museum in Portsmouth, Nauticus in Norfolk-it has lots of things to see there plus the USS Wisconsin that you can go thru, the Air and Space Museum in Newport News, Virgina Marine Science Museum in VA Beach. There is also a zoo in Norfolk and the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk. Then there is the Ocean Front with all the beaches. Personally I prefer Sandbridge for swimming. It has picnic areas, play grounds and showers and dressing rooms. The Tidewater area has lots to see and do. I don't think we are going anyplace for a vacation this year. We've been going to ME for years every year. It is long drive, and an expensive flight. We'll probably go see the grandkids in Maryland and New Jersey. Brockie

Bama, Virginia Beach is a terrific location. If you plan to go to the eastern shore, don't miss the ride on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It's the biggest suspension bridge in the world(17 miles), and it goes underwater not once, but twice. The kids will love it! The toll to cross the bridge is about $10, I think. There is also a small island in the middle where you can the the entrire bridge. Bay Bridge Website (http://www.cbbt.com/) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks savani. I'll have to put that on our "to see" list. I think the kids would be amazed. |
