I really don't enjoy cutting out my patterns, and find it to be more than a nuisance...it just wears me out!

So I usually cut a couple of things at once, after raising the kitchen table with soup cans. This time I went on a marathon, cutting clothes for what I hope will be spring/summer soon although now they are calling for snow flurries on Monday (!).

I cut a wrap skirt from a beige/stone twill; a bright dark cherry red sleeveless blouse that has a centre ruffle; a sleeveless double fabric shell from a tye-dye style crinkle cotton; and a 3/4 length sleeve classic blouse from a check that has the red, and other colours I like in it. Then....I cut a pair of causal pants from jogging fleece; a t shirt for my husband, a pair of stylish capri pants with added bits from the leftover jogging fleece for dd. Whoo! That took one night of planning and almost two days of cutting!! But I'm a happy camper, all set up to make some nice outfits.

Still have a top/skirt to finish for dd for Spring (hopefully for Easter) and she wants a denim skort (need to buy that pattern for that) and with the length of denim I have I can also make a ds a denim shirt/jacket. Just need some other kind of skirt for me, then lots of t-shirts, which I seem to make every year but always need more

Would also like to find - probably Walmart will do it - some fabric for Easter placemats, not too Easter-y but definitely spring-y!

I used to do things like that but now -- even with my extra large cutting table -- it would kill my back. Besides, after the first item, I'd be changing my mind about what I wanted to make. I am making a real effort in my life to be less organized and more impulsive.

Dorothy, I have a real problem with swelling, painful feet...after all this I can hardly walk! The soup cans under the table really saves my back. dd made dinner last night and will again tonight. But I'm just glad that I won't have to do *any* more pattern cutting for a good month or more!

The main reason why I did it was that I wanted to be sure to use some fabric I had in the best way possible before buying more without any real idea of how I was going to use at least some of my stash :)

I bought a really high really large cardboard cutting table with rotary cutting mats on top. I cut with a rotary cutter and it makes a lot of difference for me. Before I got the table, every time I cut anything my back would hurt so bad I would seriously consider giving up sewing altogether. (I also tried to think of ways to get my daughter to come over and do all my cutting. But she refuses to respond on a moments notice, dropping everything to drive 45 minutes to wait on me. I guess I didn't raise her right).
But I keep the cutting sessions as short as I can because my feet hurt too.
As for using up stash -- when I run out of space I buy more shelves. Then I have to buy more fabric to put on them.

I know you have to stand to cut out the big pieces. Why not get cut the small stuff out sitting down. No, not with a rotary cutter either. :bg:

I try to do my cutting out on Sunday afternoon for what I plan to sew during the week. I usually can get 3 or 4 things cut out then.
Also, I cut out in the wee hours of the morning when I'm restless and cannot sleep. We've all had nights like that I'm sure. It makes the time pass quickly and I usually tire out after one garment and can get back to sleep. When do others like to do their cutting? Inquiring minds would like to know.
Happy Stitching!

I cut out in batches too. I hate to take the time to cut when I'm in the mood for sewing so I try to have a stack ready and waiting for me.

I cut just before I make something -- some pieces are left until just before I need them. My feet and back don't enjoy long sessions and I find I make the most mistakes when I'm tired. If I cut out more than what I'm working on I'd have big stacks of cut fabric instead of big stacks of uncut fabrics and then I couldn't change my mind at the last minute.

I used to be a marathon cutter. Now I am doing good to just get one simple thing cut out.
I use the dining room table, but must admit I'm fond of the wood floor in my family room. Up until a few weeks ago, we had no furniture in this room and it was great for cutting out fabric, painting furniture, etc. Now there's a couch, a TV and a Play Station 2 in there. Really messed me up!
