I hate to say it but this is NOT a beginner project. Is there anywhere in your area that offers sewing classes? Try the local fabric stores, sewing machine dealers, and community college. Ask around, someone probably offers lessons in their home also. Call your county home economist (under the county extension office) to see if they know of someone offering lessons. Buy yourself a good sewing book. I recommend "The Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing" or Simplicity's "Simply The Best Sewing Book". These will explain how to read a pattern, tell you about different fabrics, and show you most anything you need to know about sewing. Another good way to start is to sign up for the beginning class here on this website. Go to www.sew-whats-new.com and follow the links. |

Considering the hassle and expense of finding the fabric and the sheer frustration of working with satin -- even if you are an experienced sewer -- you might do better buying the sheets and making Mary's skirt. Dorothy |

I totally agree with what's been said about this not being a beginner project and satin being very hard to work with. People often want to make sheets because they think it will save money, or they can't find the sheets they want. Fabric wide enough to make sheets is very rare and often sheets are used as fabric yardage in order to get those widths. Google can be your friend in locating rare sheets. Just enter "sheets satin king" and see what happens. I haven't tried their new Froogle component which is especially for shopping. Recently I bought my first ready made curtains and drapes in decades when I found them cheaper on the net than I could make them. Why wrestle all that expanse of fabric when I could be working on smaller, more satisfying projects. |
