If you can give a more detailed description of what your thread is doing people here can help you improve your skills and fix this problem. Clear thread is more difficult to work with than regular thread, so this is not your solution. What brand of thread are you using now? How are you matching it to your fabric? |

well with being a beginner, it looks bad in the front of tyhe dress, you know when you first sewed. I use pollyester thread, that came with my machine from my mom. I used white thread for a pink and white dress, is this right. How do you tell which threads to use?? |

When you say it looks bad do you mean the first few stitches of the seam? These should be enclosed in an intersecting seam or a hem, not showing on the outside. A good thing to do is use some scraps and practice stitching to make sure you have the right stitch length and the right kind of needle. To choose the right color thread unroll an inch or so of it and place it on the fabric. You will see which one shows the least or looks the best on a fabric of more than one color. Try to do this in daylight. Take the thread and fabric to the window of the store. Your mom's old thread might not be good any more, or might not have been good quality to begin with. It is really worth spending the extra for high quality thread, such as Mettler or Gutermann. |

I agree with drlmull. When you match your thread, though get it just a slight shade darker because it sews in just slightly lighter. The clear threads are for very special types of sewing. They tend to knot and tangle. However, when the time comes, you can purchase it in clear and smoke color. Remember, unless you are top stitching, the only one who will likely ever know what the stitching is like is you. As far as the pink and white fabric, I'd also sew with white. The pink might show through.

The best thing to do is practice that on scraps until you acquire control of your machine. Any back stitching you do should be kept within the seam allowance where it won't show. All you need is two or three stitches to secure your ends. A trick I use is to start a bit away from the edge, backstitch first, then stitch forwards over it. This locks the thread and makes it easier to cover your stitching line because you can "steer" better going forwards. It also keeps the machine from swallowing the fabric edge inside the hole where the needle goes through the throat plate. Another trick is to leave a long thread tail at the beginning and end of a seam, thread it through a hand sewing needle and tack it in place after you're done. Take a couple of stitches inside the seam allowance. |

It would be more valuable to put the pics on a site like ofoto and post the link for everyone to see. Only a couple of us have responded here, but I'm sure more people will offer input during the week. |

If you can see between the seams while looking from the outside of the dress, it is probably a tension problem (although it might be a problem with stitch length.) Post what you can and we'll try to talk you through it. Don't be embarrassed, most of our first garments were horrible, unless we had someone there with us for every step.
