My husband is retired military..we have retired military health insurance...there are rules we have to follow or lose the insurance....I saw a Dr 3 wks ago, for routine yearly testing, or so I thought...He was a civilian working at the base temporarily due to everyone getting rotated overseas....He was a nice man and actually spoke to me like a human being (it was nice for a change). He told me what tests he was running, but some of them I hadn't heard of, he said it was all routine, I must have had some of them before....Some of them I'm sure I did, but when I walked into the lab, the woman asked if I was white...I guess I looked at her funny, because I asked why she needed to know, for these routine tests...she said she was required to ask everyone..hhhmmmm...I'd had blood tests the month before and the question wasn't asked then.... The tests came back last week and today I was summoned into the Drs office (new Dr, the previous one was gone already). I was told on the phone I had the trait for " beta thalassemia " and that I needed to come in today...The woman on the phone had NO idea what it was, but I made the appt anyway. (I'm not allowed to refuse the appt, unless I reschedule right then for another day...but she made it sound urgent) After I got off the phone I got online and looked it up...I LOVE WebMD and Google.. I have a trait, because I'm Italian, that will cause children, if I marry another Italian or Greek, to have severe anemia, which btw they can only treat with blood transfusions and iron, IF you need either.... They didn't bother to ask if I had kids ( I don't....) how old I was (49) whether I WANTED to have kids (no) or whether I was married to an Italian or Greek. (he's english/irish) I'm not allowed to cancel an appt more than twice in a lifetime. (well I NEVER cancel appts....I need my insurance) So I went...the Dr tried to give me a handout of stuff I'd already read online, the SAME place I'd read from online, WebMD. I wasted 3 hrs and a Dr appt. for nothing...I'm grateful for the care...I like the Dr and her med tech (they don't call them nurses in the AF), but it was all for nothing....I don't have a disease.... I'm STILL shaking my head in wonder....wondering why ??? Why the genetic test in the first place and why the rush to tell me basically theres nothing wrong with me (hahahahahaha) but I 'carry' a trait....when it could have been handled on the phone with 2 or 3 questions...and maybe some truth about the tests in the first place... I'm surprised any doctors or lab personnel take the time to do genetic testing. The way HMOs are now, you're lucky if the person taking your temperature is the same person administering tests. The doctor comes in for 5 min, after making you wait, partially undressed, in a cold room for over 1/2 hr. They always claim to be behind schedule and if you need to see a specialist, you may not be able to. Be glad you weren't in the hospital in some compromised scenario that you couldn't get out of. I hope all works out well for you. I'll say a prayer. |
