Hi Desiree,

I have just started sewing myself, and after reading my sewing machine's manual I made a pull up skirt, and used the help and advice from the free lessons posted on this site. Here is a link to the free lessons I am using:

http://www.sew-whats-new.com/sewinglessons/

And here is the link to the first lesson on the pull up skirt:
http://www.sew-whats-new.com/sewinglessons/class1.shtml

Have fun with your skirt!

Where do we get the waist band fabric? Is it cut off the end of fabric before we hem the sides or is it a separate piece of fabric?

I haven't sewn a garmet since highschool...long ago...lol...I have only used my machine for quilting, and really haven't paid attention to learning the 'details' about sewing...but I really want to try this. I hope people post lots of questions so that I won't have to do too many. I'm excited. My daughter is three and a half and she would love a skirt, so would my niece who is eight...she thinks I'm the 'crafty' aunt, so I'd love to make her one.
Looking forward to my results! I will buy the fabric tomorrow, until then I'll need to read the instructions a dozen times to make sure I can visualize everything.
Very excited.

Yes Pudge, the waistband fabric is cut from the original fabric piece.

So does it come from the bottom edge of the skirt or from the side? Sorry to be so difficult but I have not made many skirts I am a dress person most of the time.

Pudge, the piece for the waistband comes from the end of the fabric. You will begin cutting from one selvage edge. :bluesmile

Hi, I'm relatively new to sewing so I need a little help. If I were making this skirt for a little girl do I still need to add 18" to the hip measurement?:Canada:

Pudge, use regular interfacing then.

Hi TangledThread, welcome to Sew Whats New. No, you would allow enough fabric for a waistband, probably 3" plus their measurement from side to side, from one hip bone to the next plus a couple inches.

Thank you for the welcome and the answer. I have another question about measuring for the material needed for the waistband and a measurement for the interfacing required for a small girl. I was able to finish cutting out my fabric, hem the sides and almost finish the hem. Thank you for easy to understand directions.

I should have been more specific. Since the original measurement for the skirt had to be adjusted for a little waist, how much do I adjust/reduce the recommended waistband and interfacing measurements?

Of course a former Albertan would be so smart! :bg:

This is difficult. I don't see too many wrap skirts for little girls.
Your waistband measurement will be the child's waist measurement plus the overlap. The interfacing measurement will be the waistband measurement minus 5/8" on each short end.

Oh Yannick, thanks for posting. I thought no one was doing the skirt. It sounds like you used the perfect fabric.

Just about to make the wrap skirt and I can't find the instructions! I should be embarrassed to admit it, but I want to make the skirt badly enough to make the admission!

TangledThread / MaryW -

OK, so I made this skirt for my 2-year-old daughter and here is how I did the measurements:

Skirt rectangle: Child’s waistline + 16 inches. Then the desired length + 2” (just like original directions). Those two measurements are the dimensions of your skirt rectangle. My daugther’s waistline is 20” and I liked a 8” length, so my rectangle was 36” X 10”.

Waistband: I didn't have waistband interfacing, so I used regular interfacing at 2" wide. For a waistband length, use (your child’s waistline) + 7”. Using the 20” waistline example, you would cut out a rectangle of 3” X 27” for the fabric and 2" X 26" for interacing. I did the waistband slightly differently than the directions, but it turned out fine.

Thanks Mary for a great project! A wrap skirt is very practical for my toddler. It can grow with her -- to some extent! I also like it because it is not too gathered, I don't like super-flouncy girlie stuff.

Maybe I will post pix tomorrow after my DD is up and dressed...

Thanks Kelly, I appreciate you sharing your information on this. I had an email just the other day about downsizing a skirt for a little girl. :bluesmile
