Has anyone checked out this site?

www.ottobredesign.com

Looks like a free pattern there somewhere to print out. It is a magazine full of kids patterns, something along the same idea as Burda.

I would love to try this, but it is $58.16 Canadian according to the exchange rate on the internet. Has anyone else tried it yet?

I bought the magazine today so anxious to try it. The patterns for the little boys are really nice for ahange. If you consider the number of patterns inside the price is not really that bad.

From what little bit I saw on the website, there is a bit of European influence in the clothes.

I love these patterns. I subscribed when it first became availalbe in English. I hesitated to subscribe for the 2nd year because how many children's patterns do I really need? Well, because the patterns are so stylish and fun and the occasional woman's pattern have really appealed to me, I decided to take it for another year.

In addition, they give a sewing lesson in each issue. Well, I think it's in each issue. The lessons are magnificent with really good illustrations.

Wazoodle (http://www.wazoodle.com) is offering single issues for sale. I think she sold out immediately, but she's going to get more.

Also, there's a Yahoo!Groups (http://groups.yahoo.com) mailing list devoted to these patterns. The database was down, but you should be able to find the list by searching for ottobre

I got it at my local drugstore for just over $15.00 Cad. Inside it says that a one year subscription if 36 Euro. Just flipped through it but the designs look quite cool and for a large range of sizes.

Sizes are up to 170cm which is like 5' 6"( I think). Some of the boys pants and shirts would be fine for a teen.

Jordan is 5'8" but lengthening is no biggie for him. He is very slim. I think I might just go find a copy. :bg:

Hello all,
I have received my first copy of Ottobre design, even though it is the spring '03 issue (don't know why ??) I love the designs- it has 44 designs- simple instructions - and can't wait to make the hippie style blouse and denim skirt for DD. I will post updates on how the sewing went with these items.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful source!!

Have just purchased this book after reading your comments and finding that it has just arrived in Australia. Although we've only just received the Spring 1/2004 issue, priced at $16.95 it's an absolute great deal now that Topkids is no longer published, and the baby designs are absolutely gorgeous. My sister is having her 1st baby in July so I better get sewing!!! Anyway thanks for the tip..

These are a hot item! We got our first shipment in about a month ago - they sold out in hours. We bought everything left from Ottobre and they are almost gone too. The summer edition is on it's way!

An update - I've made a couple of the items from ottobre - they are so quick - but sometimes I can get confused on the pattern pieces to cut, after I read the instructions and kind of picture the pieces then I know how to cut, but If I were a beginner I would definatley be lost....

I love thier designs - so original and different - also I like that they have coats and weather appropriate items included in thier issues.

so would you not recommend the ottobre designs mag for a beginner?

I'm a complete beginner - never sewed on a machine until I picked it up last month on a whim. I sewed a double layered fleece scarf for hubby and now am tackling a pair of fleece pants for my 1 year old son from a pattern (first pattern I use). My problem is the frustration with finding a cute pattern for my son. Everything in the Joann catalogs was so unimaginative (at least for my level of expertise) and I really loved the ottobre designs styles.

Are the patterns in english easy to follow? Will it be impossible for me? I would love to make Ian cute wardrobes and it would be much better motivation for me to keep on learning to sew. :nc:

Hi Marielle ,

If you're a beginner I would say that you may have a bit of confusion when you start making the Ottobre Design. The thing is that Ottobre does not really explain in full detail on some of the techniques. plus if you've used any of the big 4 pattern they ususally have illustartin on a step by step outline. Ottobre does not have that much detail but I wouldn't pass it up because of that. I'd rather have good designs over illustrations... So even if it may take you a couple of times reading the instructions over (or maybe more) it's definatley worth it! Plus you'll always have us around to help you get through any questions you may have.

I've been happy with Ottobre so far and will definatley renew my subscription again!

Hi Marielle and welcome to Sew Whats New.

For a beginner, I would really hate to see you get confused and put off of sewing. Try a couple of patterns from Butterick or McCalls for kids first. Their illustrations and instructions are easier to understand. Once you have a few things made and a little confidence built up, by all means try Ottobre. Their designs are the best around for kids. Much more originality and unique designs.

Thank you so much for the advice. I've decided to buy the Summer 2004 issue to work on next spring. I'll continue to try simple patterns this fall and winter to kind of cut my teeth and work up to the beautiful Ottobre desgins.

I definitely am drawn to the wonderful boy designs which leave much to be desired in other patterns.

Just got my Winter2004 edition of Ottobre Design.

Wow. They have patterns for women starting too.

Loads of patterns for winter jackets, coats, hats, mitts and snowpants.

Baby bunting, mitties and awesome boys stuff too. Very nice dress pants, cargo pants and shirts with neat designs painted on the front. They tell you how to do it.

They also have patterns for boys and girls underwear, longjohns, camisoles, and Hallowe'en costumes to boot.
