As part of my quilt tours, we visited the old Willimantic Linen Company in Willimantic, Connecticut. The Willimantic Linen Co. became American Thread, makers of Star Thread, and many others. Their nickname became the Thread City because they produced so much thread for the nations. Every kind, weight, and color available. They made linen thread, cotton, and eventually they developed synthetic thread using polyester. It is now a wonderful museum is housed in an old boarding house where the workers once lived...
