I pulled out my old sewing machine late last year to help with some Christmas gifts. I had never done a whole lot with garment construction before. I had made a few things but never really got into it. I had been using it for a quilt I started to piece together in the past. That quilt is still not made but all the squares are cut and part of this nine-patch quilt is sewn.

In January of this year my husband got me a new sewing machine. Nothing real fancy but yet enough that I can grow into more sewing skills.

I started looking at patterns and material and fell in love with making things that looked nice. I have had many questions along the way and I am sure I will have more. I just wanted to look back and reflect on what I had accomplished these past four months.

I have learned several seam finishes including, zig zag, overcasting( no serger for me yet), flat felled, french and just recently a mock french.

I have learned how to match plaids and stripes. How to do the single layout when working with them.

I have learned how to work with stretchy knits. The joys of wavy hems and how to combat that with use of stabliziers, crowding the presser foot, double needles for hems etc.

I have used different pressor feet, like the overcast, walking, buttonhole, and zipper. I had never used much of those before.

I have learned how different needle selection and stitch selection can affect the sewn material.

I have put a zipper. Not to mention it was put into the most terrible fraying, slippery fabric I have ever worked with.

I have lined something. I made a purse/bag that had to have lining, another new task for me.

I have learned that pressing makes a big difference in the finished product.

I have learned better techniques on darts and many other things.

I could have looked a lot of this information up on the web and I have, but sometimes I need someone else to explain something a different way for me to "get it". For that I say thank-you. I have a new hobby that I just love. I am so thankful for all of the sewing boards that I go to and all the new friends I have made.
