...on a peasant dress (no waistband (? I don't think)* --Explanation: I have found a wonderful quick pattern from an old Country Booklet of Prim things! (I am mainly "self" taught, and am a graphic artist makng cloth dolls --not a seamstress at all!) This peasant country dress has a soft "sweatshirt" for a top on the dress, which is then embroidered. * Then 2 yards of chosen cotton fabric are made into a skirt, and gathered and attached to the top at the "waistline" of the shirt.> I guess the dress sort of just "hangs" ! --??? What would be the best way to gather up the skirt, and what type of thread is the best to use? THANKS! I am a NewBie here*! (The picture in the book is pretty --does this sound unusual? I hope I look okay in the dress--I am short.)

I use a zig zag over a nylon cord so the thread does not break Some will use two rows of stitching stitched at a 5.0 stitch length and then gathered.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Hand gathers work well if it is a loose gather and fit (that's what yours sounds like). Dorothy |

Thanks, both replies! --I think I will pursue this a lttle bit with Dorothy, okay? Umm...the "hand-gathering" --is that where you gather enough fabric at the top to fit in your one hand, then attach to the top (so-called) waistline--to connect this make-shift dress? Does this site have anything on hand-gathering? --maybe I will do a SEARCH on it somehow here on site, or on the internet generally under "sewing /gathering" ..??? Any further suggestions would be helpful. I'm such a NewBie*! ALSO: > Thread type ?

No, I just meant gather the skirt with a running stitch by hand. It's easier to pull than on the machine -- threads don't break. But it only works well if you have large, loose gathers. Then I sew them down with a row of regular stitching in the seam allowance -- like stay stitiching. But there are a lot of people who do nothing by hand if they can avoid it. Dorothy |

Use your shirring foot to gather the skirt. Makes short work of it. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

But I know what you say is true! I hand-sew to relax--it's "therapy". Of course, I make all of my small cloth dolls with hand-sewing (I have a thread under Patterns just started on this same site). The ToP to this country-type dress is embroidered --I just got the top yesterday at a thrift shop (see above for description in thread) it is not a sweatshirt, but close*~ (a little nicer). It is soft material like light-weght sweatshirt, with very tiny ribbing --a shirt with 3/4 length sleeves by Cherokee --. May I ASK you AGAIN, dear Dorohy, (because I am going to use your method) -- What kind thread is best?-- just for this hand-gathering process? ScRaPs!*sTuDio
