If you can help, please respond here, thanks. Hi Mary Thanks for putting up this site. It’s full of useful information, and it’s a great pleasure reading the articles. I’ve been searching the internet for info on handling permanent and removable collar stays for a long while but in vain. Maybe you know of any site that provides such info? All I want to know is how to sew a permanent collar stay and how to make the openings for the removable ones. Many thanks. Best regards Glory MaryW

Collar stays can be found in the notions department of Hancock Fabrics or JoAnn Fabrics. Also websites like Clotilde.com has them for sale also. To add permanent collar stays, one makes a little pocket on the undercollar about 1/4 inch from the collar point and sews them in. For removable collar stays, the same method applies except one leaves a small opening (like a small buttonhole) on the undercollar for inserting and removing the stays. Check out David Page Coffin's book "Shjrtmaking". Page 106 & 107 have detailed instructions on making a collar with collar stays. The book may be in your local library. Happy Stitching!
