Hello to all,
I have a question about fabric. What is the most comfortable for children to wear in the summer? The cotten in the stores and on the jumper I made seems so stiff and ruff. Will that go away after repeated washings? What is everyones opinion about fabric for toddlers and babies?

Thanks,
Tamara

Most of the sizing will go away in things like printed cottons, even denim, but denim is a little heavy for summer. I love to put the girls in searsucker prints and stripes. I use a lot of broadcloth and I use duck and kettle cloth for heavier items. Pique is nice for dressy things too. Cotton absorbs sweat and doesn't build up heat as bad as some things.

ps Sailcloth is another nice summer fabric and it makes up crisp.

Cottons and poly/cottons are nice for the summer. All cotton will absorb sweat, blends are a little nices as the cotton absorbs an the poly has wicking characteristics.

Store bought items are often sized so they lok good on the shelf. They will soften up after a few launderings.

If you are looking for really soft, try ring spun knits (jersey or interlock). These come soft and get softer as you use them.

I really like cotton seersucker. It's the wash N' wear fabric of the 1930s. It's lightweight, and if 100% cotton, it breathes well, so it's very comfortable in the summer. Because of the textured surface, you don't have to press it. Also because of the textured nature of the weave and because it usually doesn't come in a solid color, stains tend not to show. I think all of those things make it ideal for children's clothes.

It sews up very easily, like a quilting cotton. Altho, you could starch it before cutting to make it even more manageable. Be sure to prewash the yardage; cotton shrinks.

I agree... Seersucker and printed cottons were the only fabrics I purchased for the boys ( 2 1/2 and 15 months) this year. (well, and a little broadcloth for facings)

They are really hard on clothing at this age and my experiece with Seersucker is that it can take a beating one day and still make it to church on Sunday.

The texture of the fabric on the bolt really throws me off sometimes too. You kind of have to guess what it will feel like after a few spins in the wash.

For me, an added bonus of seersucker is that it hides sewing mistakes well. :)

If you will scrub an end of the material in your hands, (like you are hand washing) you will be amazed how much sizing you can scrub out there in the store.. (good fabrics look and feel almost the same, but the ones full of sizing really show up how flimsy they are after this test) Try it next time you are in the fabric shop..
