Please post here if you can help, thanks.

Hi Mary,
I am having a problem with my Singer machine. I have NEVER been able
to sew on it. The thread jams up under the throat plate by wrapping around
the bobbin and the fabric will not move at all. Eventually I have to remove
the throat plate and cut the top thread from where it has wrapped around the
bobbin. It is a horizontal spool position threading machine with
"automatic" tension. I have the tension in the "automatic" position and the
stitch length on 2 or 3. Do you have any suggestions for what I might try
to fix this? I am sure it is something simple and I don't want to take it
to the repair shop unless I have to.
Thank you for your time.

Try two things first: Make sure that your needle is in all the way and the flat part is to the back. turn your bobbin around and make sure that it is feeding into the tension in the bobbin case. ..some feed clockwise, others counterclockwise. More often than not, it has to do with the bobbin. Also, I don't know about your particular machine, but most require the bobbin thread to be brought up through the throat plate and the needle thread and bobbin thread should trail to the back of the machine. One of the major reasons for the bobbins tangling is because it is picking up stray thread. One more thing, raise your presser foot and rethread your top thread. Then lower your presser foot and see if you seem to have tension on your top thread...you may have misthreaded your machine or you may not have your thread in the tension disks.

Mary - I had these same symptoms on a machine I had for 28 years that had never given me problems. After trying everything, I ran my finger over the top ring of the bobbin case and there was a burr of some sort that had formed. Filed it down with an emory board and, sure enough, that took care of the problem. You may also want to check the underside of the needle plate for burrs or stray debris.

This happened to me all the time. In my case, I took a quilt class and found if I hold the two threads in back of needle, when at starting point, the thread doesn't tangle. I have been fussing with this same problem for years. Since my class, I have not had one bit of problem with material jamming. Hope your problem is as simple to solve. Good Luck.
