I have always thought you were not supposed to sew silk fabric with a polyester thread. The thread is stronger than the fabric and will cut the fibers.

Now, I have just read on www.denverfabrics.com to use polyester. This is my first time sewing with this fabric for myself, anyone have any experiences to share.

Mary,
I use polyester thread on any fabric.. The secret is to wind your bobbins at a reasonable speed , not 90 mph, so that the thread is not stretched on the bobbin.. When this happens (stretched thread) after it is sewn into a seam, it tightens back up and causes puckered seams... Ever since I read that, and slowed down on my bobbin winding, I have had no problems with polyester thread..My machine seems to have a problem with dual duty thread. (shreads it , every once in a while):bg: :bg:

I did use the polyester thread. This is a very dressy top that will only get worn 4-5 times a year. I am not that worried.

I think the biggest concern is whether the polyester thread would cut the silk fibers.

I'm sure I've read elsewhere that polyester thread was okay, but silk thread was too strong and could tear the fibers at stressed areas. I read umpteenth sewing stuff, but turned 50 last month and I wouldn't quote me on anything! It was on the internet, I believe.

Libby,
Thank you so much for the speeding advisory!
LOL! I always put the pedal to the medal when I am winding my bobbins:whacky:
Now, I know that I had better s--l--o--w down! Maybe that is the explanation behind the bobbin thread problems I have been having. Every once and a while my bobbin thread catches and pulls the material into the throat plate.

Very helpful information.

Thanks,
Jen in CA
