Hi everyone, I was just wondering how many of you sewers buy fabric online. I am nervious about using a credit card to on a site that doesn't have the name of a fabric store chain. Have you had positive/negative experiences? What sites do you like the best? Have any of you tried: http://www.fabricattic.com ? I am getting frustrated with my Joann and Hancock. The Joann out here is so poorly managed and it doesn't get large quantities of fabric cause it is so small. I WANT a superstore. Well if you could let me know about the online fabric shopping that would be great! Thank you! Lindsay |

I buy a lot of fabric on line and have never had a problem. I have a lot of links but they are in my old computer so I can't give them to you. One way to find things is to go to Threads Magazine's links page. They have links to all their advertisers and that's a lot of reputable places. Most will send swatches for a small fee. I took a look at Mary's new sponsor, Londa, yesterday and it looks like Mary has drummed her up some business. I suggest everyone take a look. Dorothy |

Swatches are a must. I didn't see a way to order them from Fabric Attic. You want to feel and see the fabric for texture and color. The danger now is from Spyware, programs that load themselves into your computer and can record where you go on the internet to target popup ads to you. Some record keystrokes and can potentially get your info. I haven't had a problem with my credit card so far but am switching back to phone ordering except for companies that already have my cc number on file in an account. |

I didn't think that my Joann's were the greatest stores in the world, but I got some Marcus Brothers Red Hat quilt fabric in there yesterday...and 40% off too! Marcus Brothers just started that line a couple of months ago, so I was totally surprised to see it there. Just goes to show that all you have to do is look around a bit... So far as ordering online, if you don't see the little padlock at the bottom of your screen, it's not a secure ordering system. You want to stop spyware? Well, you can't get it all, but you can stop a lot of it. I've got Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware both...and to stop those annoying pop-ups, I installed the Google toolbar free. It's great, and Google is right there where I can get to it fast. I just place my first order with http://www.fabric.com and I have to say I was totally surprised. They had a Home Dec fabric blowout, and I found a blue on blue stripe drapery fabric for $2.97 per yard, so I ordered ten yards. What I got was MUCH better than I expected...those stripes were satin weave! And the fabric has a wonderful hand, they will drape beautifully! Now that prom is over, my tab top drapes will be on the cutting table. What annoys me the most about many of the fabric websites is the outrageous shipping charges...I've cancelled more than a few orders because of that. But now that the gas prices are going through the roof, those charges will only get worse. I still think it's easier to stop at Joann's on the way to wherever I'm heading... =^..^= Kim

Most stores let you pay using PayPal, or by calling in your your credit card number. Regarding shipping charges, you have to consider that most on-line stores are selling higher quality goods that you can't always find at chain stores. If you compare on-line prices to boutique fabric shops, you will be saving a bunch. Add it all up and even with the shipping, you will almost always save when buying on-line. LeeAnne

I'll second what Malibucat says re: Fabric.com. I've been shopping with them for more than a year with narry a problem. Once I received the wrong fabric, and called their customer service number. They not only immediately sent out the right yardage, they told me to keep the mistake, with was several yards of some very nice stuff which I was able to use for another project. Ditto Denver Fabrics, and Bargain Fabrics, both of which have websites. I apologize for not knowing how to do the blue thingie, but you can find them through any search engine. Jorja |

I buy online from www.equilter.com www.borntoquilt.com and I've never had a problem...I always try and buy online from business that have an 800 number and their business address printed on their pages....that way you know where it is and can contact them by phone if you need to. PayPal is great that way you're covered in case theres a problem...(but then most credit cards ARE safer these days to use, because the compaines are looking out for fraud) Chrys

I did some checking...the Marcus Brothers fabric I bought at Joann's is from the #R12 collection called Hats and Heels. I paid $3.64 per yard on sale...I found them at Cottonland quilts for $8.25 per yard. Nothing at all wrong with the quality of the goods from Joann's either. I ordered two patterns from a company that had them at a really low price, but their shipping was ridiculously high. That ruined the bargain for me. I love getting the newsletters from the quilt shops, it helps me to keep up with what's new out there. But I sure can't afford to shop at most of them! =^..^= Kim
