Hi,

I trying an A-line skirt.....again. The pattern requires a zip and waist band. The last time I tried an A-line skirt, the zip was to be inserted on the side and when I was done, there was a sort of bulge towards the end of the zip. Does anyone know why this happened and perhaps how I can prevent it from happening again? Also, the fabric that I would like to sew this in is a sort of light weight suede. Do you think that this would make the skirt too bulky?

Thanking you

Hi Shamaniranchhod, welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile
I think a suede is fine for a slim fitting skirt, but it might be a bit heavy for an A line. Some people could wear it, if they were tall enough.

There are lessons here on the site for two different skirts.

If it was a bulge with a "wave" that wouldn't go away, you may have moved the bottom seam allowance so that it was slightly higher or ower than it should have been...very easy to do. (One way to help with that is to press your seam allowance open before you put the zipper in.)

If it was just a bulge in the zipper itself...one of those "mystery" things that might look good until you put it on, it may have been that the fabric was just a little tight at the hips (could be fractions of an inch), so the zipper pulls when it is put on but looks great until it is. (There is a space on an a-line dress where the fabric is bias and it gives...usually near the hip/abdoman area).

If the zipper is that way whether it is on or not, then you may have stretched the fabric when you inserted it...it might even pull to one side, if one side is stretched more than the other. Depending on how bad, it might look mismatched.

I'm sure that there are other reasons for a zipper to bulge too. You'll probably get a lot of answers to this one.

My first thought was maybe the zipper you chose was a little too heavy for your fabric . Does that make sense? If this was the problem using a lighter weight zipper or fusing interfacing into the zipper seam line will solve it. :)

I always move my zippers to center back or center front. And this may require that you cut the back out as 2 pieces. I think there is too much stress on the side seams.

I have always moved my zipper from the side seam to the back seam too. I think it is the hip curve that upsets the apple cart. It can be done of course at the side seam but I take the easy way out and put it in the back most times.

Thank You to everyone for your input. I think I'm going to opt for the easy way out this time and just move the zip to the back. I will try the side seam zip at some point when I have some more experince and confidence.
