I am trying to make a graduation dress for my grade 8 daughter - a fitted top and skirt in satin with chiffon sleeves. It is a McCall's pattern #4298 - she is a size 8-10. The sleeves form a part of the neckline. Here is the link to the pattern: http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/mccallspatterns/shop.cgi?s.item.400004298=x&TI='4298'&pageNum=1&M=&UK=32579601 I have managed well so far, but I cannot figure out the sleeves (top E) as when they are attached they pull tightly across her upper arm. When not attached they work fine. The top fits her well, otherwise, although it would be better taken in 1/4 " on the sides perhaps. What am I doing wrong? I am thinking that I could just do the wider straps in top B, and forget it but my daughter really likes the chiffon, and I don't know where else to put it. |

I did a gown much like yours years ago. The sleeves attached at the underarm too. They were full, puffy ones and it was tricky. Is your daughter into sports, maybe her upper arm is bigger and you need to cut new sleeves. It sounds like she doesn't have enough ease in the sleeve area. Almost forgot, welcome to Sew Whats New. Thank you Mary. She is not into sports, but she must be larger in the upper arms than elsewhere, as everything else fits fine. How would I go about resizing the sleeves? The way they are built into the neckline is confusing. I have read other posts on altering regular fitted sleeves and I'm not sure I can do it. Perhaps someone could suggest another use for the chiffon I have already cut. If I made the top with wider satin straps, maybe I could trim them with the chiffon somehow?! |

You could add chiffon ruffles around the sleeve area. Also, you could make a chiffon wrap (like a long scarf) for her arms. Congratulations on her graduation. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.
