My daughter has give me notice that next year for prom, she wants me to sew her a really fluffy tulle dress. (OK, I am so lucky, as I love to sew, and have a teenage daughter who actually designs things, picks out the fabric, and tells me to not stress over it!!!) We drive by a bridal shop near our house, and they have one there right now. It appears to have about 4 layers of tulle, and a fitted bodice.
I realized that it would be great to practice by making my lovely little niece a "dressup" dress, in the same fabric.
Here are my questions:
What is it like working with tulle, any ideas, tips, etc. on the layering.
Does anyone have a pattern for little girls (age 4) that they would recommend to use.
Thank you so much,
Jayme

I have made pageant dresses using tulle. The easy way to do this is to use a skirt pattern that is (sort of like a poodle skirt pattern) all one or two pattern pieces. Where you have less fabric on the top around the waist. Some dress makers use fishing line in the hem line, others just let the layers fall naturally.

Tulle will crawl while sewing and while cutting. Pin as best you can and trim to adjust after sewing. One good thing about tulle, if it''s fluffy enough it covers a ton of mistakes.

That is just the starting help I was looking for. It sounds to me like I want to not have any gathering happening at the waist. That will get me pointed in the right direction! I will watch for the movement of the fabric, too.
Thank you so much!

Pageant dresses, oh my gosh. What a project, yards and yards of satins and lace.

I've been shopping quietly for dressses to match the wedding dress pattern that my daughter picked out a couple years ago. It looks like we could have a wedding in the family in the next year or so. I like McCalls pattern 4285, and 4286. Pattern 4286 actually has an adult pattern that matches it...and it is close to my daughter's wedding dress pattern. You might like something more like 8675 though. A few years ago there was a pattern much like 8675 that had about 5 layers of net, tuille or chiffon overskirts. It seems that almost everyone wanted candle lighters, flower girls, etc. in that pattern, it was VERY popular.
