About 20 or so years ago I made witches boots for my daughter's halloween costume. Can't find the pattern! Now, I want to make my 4 year old grandson some that will go with "superman" and other hero clothing he has, something out of faux leather / Vinyl.

The boots were made from stiff fabric, went to the knee, covered the shoe front and had an elastic that went under the shoe to keep them on. They fit quite well -especially around the calf and ankle - and looked like a real fitted boot.

Can anyone tell me if there is such a pattern currently available. Something online would be great.

Haven't been sewing that much and I'm hesitant to try to make a pattern using the one boot I have left. The earlier one was for a 10 year old, and I am not so sure I can just make my own pattern.

I don't know of a free pattern on the internet but you could go to www.sewingpatterns.com and look through all the pattern companies costume patterns to see if there is one available. NAYY.

The item that looks like a boot but has elastic going under the foot is called a 'spat'.. back in the old days (even before my time) men wore them as a dressy part of their attire.. Not as tall as the ones you want probably. But , they were all called 'spats'..:bg:

I made my own for the school costumes that I do. I took my sons leg and had him lie on his side then I traced his leg and over the shoe. Then I added half the width of the calf. How far it was off the ground. to the front of the pattern and the back. ten I sewed it together and trim the curves. and then sew the elastic to the bottom going under the middle part of the foot. I used velcro to close the back.

Here is how they turned out. one these though I put a piece of leather under the toe of the boot instead of the elastic and i added a collar around the top of the boot.

Thank you for the compliment. He and jack Sparrow got into it and broke both of thier swords about 10 min after that pic was taken.

He sooo wanted to be the three musketteers but his brother was to be Porthos and when he heard that Porthos was a blow hard he rejected it and the other brother wanted also to be dartangen.

Thank you all for the great and quick help and suggestions - including the pattern page and the word I couldn't quite recall - "spats"

Aimee:

What a precious costume?

Thank you for sharing your directions. With my exisiting solo spat, and your directions, I think it will be fine.

The velcro is a great idea. If I remember correctly, getting the "spats" on my daughter was a bit difficult. For a 4 year old it will be impossible without the back closure.
