I have a pair of boys striped overall shorts. I want to femmy them up for my daughter. I was going to add some applique and would like to add some lace or ruffle around the legs. If I do this, do I need to cut the hemm off or attach the ruffle right above the hem. Anyone have any ideas? Just thought it was a neat idea, just don't know how to go about it. heather |

Either way is fine. If you sew it on above the hem, it may be a touch bulky but there is no hard fast rule.

You can go ahead and sew it under the edge of them just fine...as Mary says it may be just a bit bulky, but just put the lace tape (if you use gathered lace) underneath and use your blindstitch hemmer foot with a straight stitch to guide your stitches on top with the blade of your foot bumping the edge of the pants...that will make your stitching almost perfectly close to the edge and if you keep the tape under the edge you should catch it when you sew. Unless you were going to fray the edges, you would have to hem the pants anyway...and the factory hem is very dependable.

If you leave the hem you will always be able to pass them back to another little boy. I would stitch the lace to the bottom edge of the shorts.

Lace around the bib on the overalls is really cute too. Just a word of caution, use soft cotton lace or ruffle and not the scratchy "stuff".
