I have a friend who is trying to miter corners on slippery polyester fabric for napkins. Any suggestions for getting neat corners after turning the fabric under 1/4" two times? Thanks much.

Turn the corner "in" first....fold a triangle across the fold line of what will become the finished napkin edge and press, then press the raw edges under that triangle. then proceed to fold the rest of the napkin. When you get to the corner, you should end up with a fourty five from each side producing a mitered corner.

Thanks, I'm a little confused and wish I had a diagram. It sounds like it would probably work. Do you know anywhere I could possibly see a picture of this?

Not off hand, but if you experiment with a piece of paper, you will be able to figure it out. It really isn't hard...the biggest problem is folding the "left over fabric under at the corner and as long as you have a good second fold, excess can be trimed (you would be trimming off a little tiny triangle of fabric to take out the excess. Then, the rest of the hem is very simple.

Here's how I figure out the miter corner. I press up seam, how ever much you are going to have, on the corner I am going to miter. You end up with the press marks crossing at the corner. This is where you fold the corner in at-right where the crossed press marks are, it forms a triangle. It also helps to have the pressed seam lines matching up once the corner triangle is folded in too. Make your hem and it automatically makes the miter. A good book that has diagrams and instructions for this and a miter where the hems aren't equal is Sewing Secrets from the Fashion Industry edited by Susan Huxley. Very informative book.
Hope my discription helped.
