My husband just got his motorcycle running (you should see the smile on his face!) and he's wanting some saddle bags to go on it. He asked me if I could make them , but I'm at a loss as to where to look for patterns. Is this a project that I could find patterns at Hancock's or JoAnnes? Does anyone know of any resources on the web that could give me a pattern to go by? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I would hate to go out and spend lots of $$ buying the saddle bags when my husband would be very happy to have me make some for him. Thanks for your help!

ok, so am i the only woman here who thought "advice on saddle bags" might be referring to a personal body issue?

;-)

but seriously, pattern #2667 (Motorcycle Accessory Pattern Pak (http://www.heritan.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TLCOC&Category_Code=saddle)) at this site looks like it might be what you need... good luck!

House of Deeter,
Have you ever sewed on leather before?? It is not difficult, just a little different... You need a special leather needle and of course you have to be careful with your seams, because the needle leaves a permanent hole with every stitch.. I suggest you make one from fabric as a test before you tackle the leather, because it is so costly..

I didn't even think of it sounding like a "physical issue"...hahaha! Sorry about that!

Thanks for all your input so far. I hope I can find something that'll work for him. If all else fails, that's what backpacks are for! ;)

Should you also use a rolling foot while working on leather? I've only used fake leather before, never the real stuff.

I've only used a roller foot on plastic.. I don't know why you would want it on leather.. I used one on the raincoat I made a child one time..:bg:

First to find the pattern, try checking sites that sell patterns for horse people. I know for a fact that they have patterns for saddlebag (the one's for bikes, not out hips). Just shorten the fabric connecting them to the length you need to go over the bike. Also, you definatly must sew with a leather needle, nothing else is quite like it for real leather. I tried just using a really heavy needle once when I was out of leather needles, I won't do that again. Next, you can try a roller presser foot, I did, but I don't think you will like it much. If I were you I would invest in a good teflon foot. If you don't have the time or money to get a teflon foot, you can fake one by spraying a foot with the temp. spray adhesive you use for embroidery, then lining the bottom of the foot with something like satin or felt. Try it, it works.
